The Cost Of Fame

by Vindictus Viridian @ 12/13/06 21:49
There are good ways to become known.

There are bad ways to become known.

Writing good stories and leaving good reviews are both good ways to become known.

Leaving several thousand reviews in the vein of "thank you i take pride in my mad posting abilities- lets see if i can do it again ready submit submit submit!" is not a good way to become known. It will get your account deleted, it will get the reviews deleted, and it will not make you or the story any more well-liked. Deleting these wastes good modding time that could be spent in the queue.

Do not do this. Authors who do not report such spamming promptly will have the spammed story deleted as well.

Whew. I was recently blamed for spamming, at rightfully so. Unfortunantly, I have also recently been leaving a review here and there on a un-validated chapter. While these reviews said things like "YAY! A new chapter is in the mods, please let it validate soon! Can't wait!", I was very concerened that I would get in trouble. But since that was teh only review that was saying this, I guess I won't. I promise to stop doing this. Thanks for clearing this up, Vindictus.

Is reviewing your own story when you are bored considered spam? Sometimes, I have done, and have seen before authors who will review their own story while it is in the proccess (sorry if my spelling is bad, its like 10:30 at night) of being validated (not that I am trying to say that the validation proccess is too slow, with all the spam, its great, and I am just happy to have a validation proccess at all) saying something like, "Wow, I'm so bored that I am reviewing my own story before it's even validated" and then respond to it by saying, "Wow, I'm so bored that I am responding to the review I made on my own story before it's even validated". Is that spam?

O.o

I'm sorry. I seem to be missing something very, very vital over here in this entire conversation. And that is: why has this conversation not stopped yet?

The purpose of this message board, it seems to me, is for the mods to get messages out to both the writers and readers on this Archive. The very fact that they allow you, within this system, to respond to these announcements, is a favor. They don't have to.
.
Vindictus Viridian made an announcement about something that had cost the mods a lot of time and energy, aside for generally pissing the lot of them off. By not deleting any of the stories in questions, they did all of those authors and additional favor that they did not have to do. Acknowledge that

As the Most Prolific Author on the Site, I can really appreciate what it means to set a goal for yourself and to reach it. I also appreciate that while I have the most stories here, there are authors out there who beat me in sheer number of words or chapters to an individual story.

Granted, there was a time over a year ago, when I blantantly spammed up a story with reviews because it was an effing brilliant story and I know that readers will sooner read a story with more reviews than one with less. It has, I think, helped the story along and I'm proud of that. But I haven't continued, and it was one spam review per chapter, and they're gone now.

I can admit to my mistakes and I stop making them
.
To blatantly insult or in any other way insinuate the mods are not doing a quick or fast enough job, in over 3000 words is to me, a gross violation of what this site allows you to do. It is a violation of trust for all the different it makes to me

The mods on the site work very, very, VERY hard to keep the site to a certain standard. I don't think that enough people appreciate how time-consuming it is to be a mod on this site. For them to have spend hours deleting over 3000 reviews means that they didn't validate any stories that day, or as many as they would have liked to.

I hope you all realize that by commenting in spam reviews that it was taking a while to validate the next chapter defeated your own purpose?

harry_kissed_ginny? To review your own story, no matter the circumstance--and I didn't even know that you could review your own story while it was in Q- is borderline evil to me, for reasons that I could not even begin to explain to describe to you. As someone who values each and every review that she receives, why would you want to fool yourself by upping your own review count?

The only reviews that mods should be deleting are flames, and in my opinion, there shouldn't be any of those on this site either. I can't personally imagine hating a story so much that I bothered going to the end to tell the author that I hated it. And, as was previously stated, if your computer posts reviews twice, let a mod know to delete them. I personally find it frustrating to get notification that a review was left to only find out that it was a bug. Again, I care about getting quality reviews.

And, that to me, is the point. The reason that MNFF is the quality site that it is, and continues to be, is because this site is about reading good fanfic. It's about being a safe place where people can post a story they've written and get real feedback on it. And if you aren't here for those reasons, you don't belong here

I don't mean to personally attack any of you, really I don't. But the fact that the mods have had to waste their time with this, that my friends have been caused aggravation by this, is very, very hurtful to me.
.
I don't expect a reply to this. I don't want a response to this. A response means that someone out there disagrees with me, and I can't see how anybody can. It also means that time is still being wasted on what has already been a tremendous waste of time for a lot of people.

Just take what has been said, learn from it, don't make the same mistake and let it go
.
Thank you to all of the mods who have invested time and patience and love into making MNFF what it is. Much love and *squish* and Happy Holidays!

Slian

Is reviewing your own story spam? Because one day when I was rwsponding to a review, I pressed the wrong button and ended up reviewing myself! It was a total accident, but am I in trouble? Just wanting to know? Sorry for the spam that I have done here too, and now I know not to do it anymore.

Thanks for telling us though, I see reviews from people (No names) saying things like:

omg
hi
thats great!!!!!!!!!!!! keep updateing!

Of course, when I was totally new here, I kinda did the last one once, everyone's done it, but are you deleting all the reviewes like that?

And I also totally agree on what Slian said, but I am too lazy to type it all up, so, thanks Silan for sparing me my laziness!

harry_kissed_ginny written on 12/17/06 9:40

Silan, I'm not disagreeing with you, but could you please elaborate on how reviewing your own story is borderline evil? Maybe someone else can if Silan doesn't want to, but I just don't understand how it can be THAT bad that its considered borderline evil

Masked One written on 12/17/06 9:55

Reviewing your own story makes it appear that you have more reviews than you really do. Since many people look at the number of reviews when choosing a story to read, it's false advertising. It's also pointless - you can't possibly give feedback on your own story. Want to talk to yourself electronically? Email yourself. Reviews are for reviewing, even if the review is only "I enjoyed the story." Even "Good" is a review - "Hi!" is not a review. It has nothing to do with the story. "I'm reviewing my own story" is a level worse, as it has nothing to do with the story, and also serves no possible purpose but pointless space wasting. If you've done it in the past, perhaps you should mark it on the list of things that seemed like a good idea at the time, and consider never, ever doing it again.

harry_kissed_ginny written on 12/17/06 10:00

Masked One, you are right. I just want to say that I do it out of sheer boredom, not to up the review count. Also, I like reading stories before lots of people reivew it, cuz i like to be first! Thanks for warning me and that will go on my already very long list of things not to do.

Gryffinpuff written on 12/17/06 10:22

Just FYI, not knowing if it might help some people who have the double or triple posting problem. After you submit your review, if you push the "back" button on your browser, it will double the post. After you submit your review, click on a link, don't try to scroll back to the story or review page =)

As for the spam, I probably have a bit on my story "Senses." It only has about 400 reviews, so it's not being grossly spammed, but just FYI if the mods need/want to go take a look. I didn't realize it caused a problem, if I get any more I'll be sure to say something to the reviewer. Thanks for letting us know!

Just dropping in briefly to mention that LiveJournal is another good, free place to hold endless conversations and get to know people.

When a simple topic like this gets 70 comments, it greatly amuses me. So what do I do? Comment, of course. Deleting spam tends to be annoying, so glad to see that the mods have a ton of patience. :D

Igo Retla written on 12/23/06 16:02

If you keep getting alerts on a story's update, sans chapter, on the same chapter, that means it's been rejected more than once. We don't do that out of meanness; we're just the quality control. Berate the author, if you like, or the beta reader, just for a little variety in our online diet.
********************
My question would be, why are we getting alerts if the chapter isn't actually validated? Having just now gotten one, of course. This would seem to be a software issue, rather than the fault of the author, betas or mods.

To me NOTHING is a mistake!!!

buckbeaker written on 12/27/06 14:17

oops! ^^ i also agree with Silian Maarteb. The mods work all around the clock to publish our stories. It's not something that you should complain about. if you are mad that they are moderating all, just go to another fanfic site! there are plenty out there! and, if you are going to tell people that you have, in fact, submitted your next chapter to the mods, then post it on your author's page, or in an author's response! it really is not that hard. Even though, Silian... i think you might have been a little harsh. I think we are still having this convo because we are showing that we either do or don't understand what's going on with the spam. I for one, don't. I DO understand, however, that it is highly hypocritical to say "i totally agree" and then go do it some more, as (from observing some of the comments above) some people have done. That's all i wanted to say...

Euphrates written on 12/29/06 10:51

I just have a question - how is it sooo hard to know what spam is? A bunch of people are saying that they have no idea what spam is. Well, if you have read many of the comments above, or all of them, you would know. It has been explained multiple times. In fact, you can look it up on Dictionary.com. I believe the appropriate definition is: a disruptive or meaningless message posted on a computer network.

There you have it. I believe spam includes messages saying: hi! what's up? what are you doing this weekend? or: hola hola hola hola! or: I have made about 500 reviews on this story! Yay me!

Note: Do not do this, okay? It doesn't help anyone, least of all the spammer, because theiraccount will be deleted, right? It does absolutely nothing and, as said MANY times before, it mucks up the modders' time and leaves them with only hours of deleting nonsense instead of modding stories.

I hope that you all, from reading the comments above mine, now understand spam, okay? If you don't, read all the comments above again. ~Euphrates

okay, someone posted the same comment on my story three times. But I believe that it was an honest mistake. They aren't (at least I'm pretty sure they aren't) trying to post a million review to get noticed. Am a little freaked out about the "we will delete the spamed fic" notice. PLEASE don't delete my story!!!!!!! (The Tenacity of Love) I only recently worked out really frustrating kinks, and basically had to start ALL OVER. I REALLY don't want to do it again!

Well, are there easier ways to get your account deleted? I've been asking one of the admins to do that but they won't reply...

I'd love to try it (but I won't because I'm nice) if no mods are going to delete this account. I'm begging anyone with the power to do so to please either delete it or tell me how.
