Thanks everyone for your interest and the part you do to make MNFF an awesome place to share fiction.
Lurid-
After a lot of hestitation, I actually began to mention all of the work I'd done on MNFF during RL job interviews. Most adults don't know what fan fiction is, so in the least, it's a conversation point that makes you stand out. Two years of editing and moderating also gives you a bit of credibility in the marketplace for nearly any job. It entails leadership skills, ability to work in a group for a long period of time and that you know your grammar.
Every company wants someone who writes well.
You know, while you can try to avoid stories because of its pairings, they pop up no matter what you do. Pairings frequently occur outside the romance categories, and you can't just pick stories, like GringottsVault said.
I don't know if you can become P.I. accredited in one day, but betas advertise themselves either through offering to beta by reviewing the story or through posting on the forums.
Penname please.
Stephanie, I put down MNFF-modding as work/volunteer experience for college applications. I'm sure it's okay, just like Lex said.
I should probably add that every potential employer I've told about my experience, they've been keenly interested in it and in some cases, impressed. So I'd say feel out your prey, and if you think it'll help, say it! It's true that they won't know exactly what that entails, like MJ said, but then you'll have the chance to explain what it is you do. :)
In my Personal Reference last year, I mentioned how I participate in "a service online" where I edit people's stories. I explained how I gave feedback to authors on their grammar and writing style. That was for a very acedemic course so it fitted in with the rest of my application. I didn't mention my editing during my app for my local supermarket, Morrisons
Mentioning Harry Potter is always an iffy issue because some people don't take it seriously and are short-sighted enough to believe it's still a children's book, whilst others might believe you're pulling their leg. Being selective with the truth is perhaps the best way, unless it was an interviewer who wanted evidence and not just references. Then, you blush and cough up, I guess. I personally don't see how working with fanfiction authors is too different to working with original story writers. Most are younger and less experienced, which provides just a different but no easier challenge.
*said she wouldn't reply in this thread* *has broken her vow of silence* *giggles* *runs away*
Is it possible to hire a mod that has no stories on the database yet?
Yes, it's possible. We like to see someone who has written fics and gotten them on the site, but it's not something necessary. There are a lot of other things that matter as well.
:)
heh...too bad I don't really have the time or I'd do it. I have a Bachlor's Degree in English Writing Arts from SUNY College in Oswego
Godspeed to the moderators. :)
So, I need to show writing to be a moderator? I mean, I need to have written stories in mugglenet or MNFF to be a moderator?
I would have done this, but I have no stories up yet, and I don't think myself the best editor ever, though...never mind. There's no applications left anyway! (Maybe I'll be a beta...)
*crosses fingers and prays* lol. I sent an application and I'm very nervous. Good luck to everyone who sent one in!
Oh, so is this why it was taking so long to get the "congrats/sorry your story has/nt been accepted" stuff back? I wondering why and getting a little ancy! But alas, all is good.
Good luck to everyone who has applied - I know that there are a lot of brilliant people who are running for it - and I don't envy the mods on having to make the decision! Best of luck to everyone!
DobbyElf, you probably shouldn't become a Beta just to "get references". It's about making a contribution and helping people, and it should be done for those reasons.
*let her lack of common sense overcome her and applied* I hope I did well! And good luck to all the rest of you fantastic people who applied as well!
Yes, good luck everyone! Also, to the Mods: When do you think you will have chosen them by? Thanks!
Also, how will we be notified? We won't just sing in one day, and *poof* we're mods?
*crosses fingers* ... Okay! You win. You've captured our attention, and we're all shaking in suspense. So... who gets it?
I didn't apply but good luck to those of you who did!
Well, it's sent! I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed...
I'm just here to wish everyone good luck and to beg anyone selected to do the site proud!
