Deathly Hallows Release Policies

by Elysa @ 06/27/07 21:18

Hello everyone! Well, I'm sure you lot don't need reminding, so as we all very well know, the final installment of the Harry Potter series comes out July 21. *Allows pause for site-wide squee'ing* Naturally, we here at MNFF are hard at work preparing for said release, and we've recently decided precisely how we'll be handling it. Please read carefully, as we cannot stress enough how fundamentally crucial this information is to both authors and readers alike.

  1. MuggleNet Fan Fiction will be closed from July 19 thru July 23. To be clear: this means that the queue will be closed and we will not be accepting any submissions, nor will we be readily available to assist users in any capacity, from 12:00 midnight the morning of July 19th thru 11:59 p.m. the night of the 23rd. Therefore, the queue will reopen at midnight, July 24th. Please note that stories already validated and posted on the site will be available to read during this time. Only the queue is closing.
  2. When MNFF reopens the queue for submissions on July 24, it will be with a strict NO SPOILERS policy. This means that expressing and/or writing about anything that transpires in Deathly Hallows will not be permitted in the stories themselves, in author profiles, summaries, banners, "clever" e-mail addresses, or graphics/expressions of any kind. Spoilers include plot twists, characters' deaths, romantic developments-- anything and everything. A user discovered to have posted any spoiler in any part of his/her profile or story will have their account deleted and banned on both MNFF and the main site, MuggleNet.com. Do not even allude to a spoiler, as we will count this as directly stating one. For example: If one part of your profile says "I ship Luna/Neville!" and another part says "My ship finally sailed!" That is a spoiler. We cannot express how seriously we are taking this. ANY breach of this policy and your ability to so much as view any part of MuggleNet will be permanently withdrawn.
  3. Starting on August 1, and no sooner, we will begin to allow spoilers in STORIES ONLY. Expressing a Deathly Hallows spoiler in a banner, profile, story title, or summary will still be prohibitied and punished with a permanent ban. August 1 only means that authors can begin working the events of DH into their stories, and/or writing new fan fictions based off the events of DH. However-- stories that contain any sort of DH spoiler must wear a Deathly Hallows Spoiler Warning. (This warning will become available for use under the "warnings" category beginning August 1, so it will not be viewable/available before then.)
  4. We will alert everyone, via news post, when it is okay to begin expressing spoilers freely: i.e., in profiles, summaries, banners, etc. However, this will not be for a while. Do NOT take it upon yourself to decide when enough time has passed, or you will be subject to a permanent ban. Our enforcement of the above policies will be just as strict and unforgiving a month after the release as a week after the release.

A separate but very similar policy for our Beta Forums is still being ironed out, but we feel confident in saying that the forums will remain open (even when the queue is closed between the 19th and 23rd) in some capacity. We'll be reporting the full details on that very shortly, so stay tuned.

In closing, we urge everyone to exercise caution and compassion throughout and following the upcoming release of Deathly Hallows; not just here at MuggleNet, but wherever you might go, on-line or otherwise. We enjoy a good laugh as much as the next person, but please realize that spoiling the end of a long-lived series such as Harry Potter for fans who've spent years waiting for the end is anything but funny. It is only rude, hurtful, and a terribly pitiful display of immaturity. For those who would not even consider spoiling the book for someone else (because we know the great majority of you never would): we beg that you pay extra close attention in all your communications on MNFF so that you do not unintentionally let a secret slip. Furthermore, while we will do everything in our power to keep the secrets of the last book safe and off our site, it is perfectly possible that something might slip through the cracks before we catch it. As such, we advise that anyone who has not finished the book and is truly worried about being spoiled, simply not visit ours or any other Harry Potter related site until you have, indeed, finished it.

As always, thank you all for taking the time to read this extensive post. Please do not hesitate to contact one of us with any questions, comments, or concerns you might have. Happy writing!

You know what...i think it's finally settling in that this is the end.... It's a weird feeling. OI.
I think I'll take your advice, and just NOT go on the computer until I finish the book...OH! How nerve racking! Thanks for the security measures; makes it seem like you guys really care. And I know you do. *grin*

I can't believe it's ending. Thanks for keeping the site- well, clean, in a way.

I'm so glad that the Mods are taking such care to allow HP readers to enjoy the book without having people spoiling the entire surprise for them. Kudos! I love MNFF for this reason!

Darn. I was going to copy the entire book onto my profile. *sigh* That's a joke. I don't have the patience for that kind of typing. Good policy!

I was wondering what you guys would do to prevent spoilers... I'm glad these rules are here, because I don't want ANYONE to ruin Book 7 for me.

Usually when I get the new books, it takes me about two and a half hours to finish them. That is when I read it myself, but with this being the last one, my children and I will be reading together. So that will take a little longer, seeing as they don’t read as fast as I do. I had planned on just staying off the computer completely during the first read through of what I am sure will be many, but with these rules, I have no fear of the dreaded spoilers. I will have to stay away from television, newspapers, and yahoo news until we are through though. I would hate to open my homepage looking for an update on a fan fiction to see a spoiler waiting for me in the news section. Thank you for not only banning the spoilers but also having such strict consequences for those that break the policy. Some might call these consequences excessive, but I say they are justified. My children and myself have been looking forward to this book for so long that even if it was spoiled for us, we would still read and enjoy it, I’m just glad that you lot won’t allow it on your site. Thank you so much, red haired mom, and sons.

Oh, good, I'm glad they're cracking down on the mean people who might want to spoil the stories for everyone else.

I know i don't want anyone spoiling DH for anyone, not just myself. I may be on holiday just a few minutes after i get the book, so i could be safe. A really smart idea to save people from getting the book spoiled if they haven'y finished it *applauses*!

I think this is a great idea, I already started a story that will be considered AU to 7th book. I won't even be beginning posting until September.

I am so glad about this! I have been having problems of being away from English-speeking countries and I might not get the book the day it comes out (*tears*) but I would like to keep up with my fanfiction.

Everyone is so happy with the new rules (including me)! Although it is unfortunatley not so, it seems like nobody would dream of putting up spoilers, rules or no rules. However, there will always be people who try to ruin stuff like this for the rest of us. Once again, thank god and thank mod for these new rules,-everyone appriciates it!
WHOO GO MODS!

Geez, I can understand why the strict rules, but I think a permanent ban is too harsh. I don't really write anymore so it doesn't affect me one way or the other, but I do not forget that long ago I once was banned from the forums for posting what I now understand was a spoiler, but back then I hadn't even realized it was a spoiler (call me dumb if you want, but I thought it was just a speculation I read in another forum, not a real spoiler). Even now I'm not sure if that was what I did because I was never told what my mistake had been.

So while I do hate spoilers too (yes I do!) I can't say I agree wholeheartedly with the new rules.

Shadowgirl written on 07/01/07 12:37

Thankyou so much for being so strict about spoilers. I hate it when other people tell me the ending of a book I'm reading. People have waited on this book release for ages and I agree that it would be selfish for anyone to ruin that.

*bows down to you all* I love you! LOL. HBP was spoiled for me last time, annd well, that really sucked. But then again, I prolly won't even touch the computer until I've read it through once, which I hope will only take a day or two =D

SHIP AFFECTS POSTING TIME
-
The time between the submission and the posting of a chapter (posting time) can usually be determined for stories that consist of only one chapter. This is done by comparing the date Published, which is in fact the date the first chapter of a story was successfully submitted, vs. the date Updated, which is the date the moderator posted the chapter to the web site, provided the author has not modified the story after posting.

I have analyzed the posting times for recently submitted romance stories that have only one chapter. Some stories were approved on the same day they were submitted while others remained in the queue for up to several weeks. I have seen no correlation between the length of the chapter and the posting time, but the ship does seem to affect how long the review process takes.

Posting times are fastest for stories about Lupin/Tonks, James/Lily and homosexual pairings, with average delays for review of: 3.9, 4.0 and 4.7 days respectively. Posting times for stories about Hermione/Draco, Ron/Hermione, Harry/Ginny, Hermione/Snape average: 6.0, 6.3, 6.6, and 6.8 days respectively. The average posting time for Harry/Hermione stories is 10.4 days. H/Hr shippers should be advised that this situation will only become worse when DH is released and all of our stories are declared plot spoilers.

Good idea mugglenet!

I myself ahve just written up a 'spoilers' policy for my site and I think yours is the best I've seen so far.

I'm glad you're doing it but it's a shame the won't be able to do the same thing with the bookstores as some idiot went to the last chapter, read it in the store, then yelled out 'Dumbledore is dead!'

Not funny.

Good for you mugglenet!
