MNFF Cleaning

by Anasuya @ 01/10/08 15:17
As you've noticed recently, there have been quite a few glitches with stories, emails etc. Some were due to the hacker attack, yet others are due to the sheer size of MNFF. We're outgrowing our database. To help relieve some pressure, we're going to be purging old usernames and inactive accounts.

Please read the following VERY CAREFULLY

ONLY accounts that have had no activity for the past 6 months will be deleted. Activity can be generally defined by logging in. So if you've logged into MNFF in the past 6 months, your account will NOT be deleted. This includes the Remember Me feature. If MNFF remembers you and you've been online in the past 6 months, your account is safe.

As long as you have a story on MNFF, your account will NOT be deleted. Only accounts without stories and without activity will be purged.

If you're in doubt about your account or would like to keep it, simply log in. That will keep it safe.

This will be happening sometime within the next week or two. I will make another post right before it happens.

Also, in order to relieve some more stress on the database, we will be doing an abandoned story purge in the near future (within the next month). However, if you know of a story that you will not be completing, we would be very grateful if you took the liberty of deleting it yourself. It will save us all some time and our servers will thank you for it.

Again, I can't stress how wonderful and patient you've all been. We're working hard to correct everything and you all are making it much easier on us by understanding. Thank you.

Hmm seems like the glitches are still about. I hope eliminating them is going smoothly. What happens to MNFF if the glitches are unable to be fixed?

Bondman007- My story need some grammar tune-ups, but I never have time to actually do them, because I'm so busy with school and stuff. Can you help me? I am also very mad about Remus and Tonks dying; Remus and Sirius were my favorite characters, and I really connected with Tonks on being clumsy! They were the best!

Hello, I have a concern. I have a story published here and it was originally supposed to have loads of chapters. However, I got stuck at the 3d chapter. It's not been accepted though I've tried many times. It's improved version is in the queue, but suppose it's rejected yet again and I give up and dont update the fic but mark it as complete, will that be enough to prevent it from being deleted. Dont get me wrong. My fic is of such a type that every chapter is kind of a short story on each HP character. I've done Hermione and Ron, so if I mark the fic as completed and leave it there, will it be deleted from the site?

Apart from this, I'd just like to wish the staff all the best while cleaning up the site. MNFF rocks!!! :D

Roxy Black written on 01/13/08 13:40

Bookwormy - When we delete fictions, we send an email to make sure the author is ok with the deletion. If you are planning to or attempting to update your fiction, but your latest chapter has not yet made it through the queue you simply need to reply to the email once you recieve it to say you wish to keep your fiction on the site. Pottergirl - This is not the place to ask for a Beta. Please go and hire on the forums or contact your desired Beta directly. anangeliam05 - Don't worry. We'll fix our site, no matter what it takes. :)

I think this has been answered, but I'd just like clarification...I have a story that I'm currently working on. It hasn't been technically "updated" since September, because the next chapter keeps getting rejected. However, I am actively trying my best to get it posted and such. (I've used several Beta's and followed the advice given in the rejection E-mails, etc.) If it surpasses the six month mark, and I still have no luck getting it posted, will I simply just receive the E-mail asking whether it'll be completed or not? (Then I can reply to the E-mail saying it's still being written, or whatnot.) If I could get this cleared up, that'd be great! Thanks!

What does it mean, 'The catagory is locked'? And then it tells me to pick a sub-catagory... Whats that? Am i doing somthing wrong, or is it a glitch? I read an answer a second ago that said to just ignore the pop up box, but how do I do that? Every time I try to continue without x-ing or clicking 'ok' to the pop up and set it aside, it doesn't let me do anything until I x it or ok it...
Thanks for the help!, Mollie

MistressofTime - Yes, to keep your story from being deleted, just reply to the email the moderator will send you. Again, more details will come when it's time to do the deleting.

Miss Molliewobbles - When you've put in all the necessary information, ignore the alert box that comes up telling you the category is locked. Instead of hitting "submit" right away, press "preview" (which people should be doing anyway as a good rule of thumb to make sure your formatting is correct). Then from the preview page, after making sure everything is in order, press "submit."

bondman007 - Thank you for your help, but please leave the questions for moderators to answer so that everyone can know for sure that the advice given is from the people who run the site :) Your last comment was not deleted out of spite; you had forgotten to close your bold tag and therefore inconveniently bolded the rest of the page.

islesfan written on 01/13/08 18:26

there are some stories like 'friendship, love and pranks: the story of the marauders' that have a chapter not validated (ch.33). Will that be fixed?

Roxy Black written on 01/13/08 18:43

islesfan - If the chapter is in the queue we will moderate it as soon as possible.

Thanks you so much Mods for all the time you are putting in to fix the problem! We all really appreciate it!

Winged Artemis written on 01/14/08 9:15

What would be defined as an "abandoned story"? I have one I've put on hiatus while I finish the other, and I haven't updated the other since September. Will one or both of these be deleted?

mooncalf written on 01/14/08 16:12

Winged Artemis - as long as you reply to the email to say you don't want your story deleted, it will be fine. September is only four months ago, so that one is safe.

bondman007 written on 01/14/08 17:32

Mods - I realize that it's a rule of thumb to write out numbers. However, manufacturers of firearms (e.g. Colt M1911A1; Beretta 92FS, M-16, you get the idea) extensively uses combinations of letters and numbers to identify specific models. I do realize that this is very similar to the different broom models in the Potter universe (e.g. Nimbus 2000, Comet 260, etc.) which brings me to my point: Does said rule of thumb (see beginning of comment) apply to these types of situations (i.e. firearm model designations; broom model designations)? Because I think I have seen Jo write broom model numbers both ways, and that confuses me. Thanks for any way you can point me in the right direction!!

bondman007 written on 01/14/08 17:36

I am just asking because I am incorporating the possibility of attack by an armed Muggle (and the subsequent inability of Harry to use magic to defend himself, due to Wizarding law) into my story, though I won't give away any details here!!
P.S. Yayy!! I did the bold tag right!!

bondman007 written on 01/14/08 17:39

Well, that and the fact that I am very detailed in my stories :)

Marauder by Midnight written on 01/14/08 18:27

bondman007 - This is a good website to use when you have questions about numbers. For the first rule, I usually encourage people to spell out numbers that are only one word long, i.e. "nineteen," "thirty." So for model numbers, you don't have to spell it out, though I know some people do when the model is mentioned out loud by a character. And thank you for closing your tag! :D

I'm just posting to wish all the mods good luck as you guys work this thing out. I hope things are working out properly and hopefully MNFF won't fall victim again to idiotic hackers!
