Update in Submissions Policy

by Roxy Black @ 03/31/08 18:14
Hello all,
Thank you for all of your kind words and support over the past few weeks. We’re very glad to say that the update has gone exceedingly well and we’re well on our way to ironing out our problems and glitches and getting the site running smoothly again. However a further problem needs to be addressed.
After much deliberation, the moderators of MNFF have decided that we will need to charge our authors for each mistake they make in their fictions to make the site financially viable. Our site is always expanding and unfortunately cyber-space is money. We have talked long and hard about the best way to go about this and have devised a little price list which we believe to be both fair and reasonable.
Obviously, MNFF is a site which values the promotion of good writing, and so we decided that it would be errors in fictions that we would charge, rather than the fictions themselves. This makes our lives as moderators easier and I hope you’ll agree that the prices we’ve come up with are equivalent to each error.
Please see below for our list of prices:

$1 for each spelling or punctuation mistake
$2 per canon error
$3 for every multiple category submission
$5 for each tiresome cliché
$10 for every incorrect title or poor summary
$20 for characterisation problems
$50 flat rate for dialogue errors

We will flag up the cost of each mistake in the rejection letters you receive with information on how and where you can pay.
Thank you,
~ The MNFF Moderators.

Susan I agree with you Last years was alot more convincing. lol. I love it. The thing is is that they are trying to be more convincing this time around. you want to know why? Because to go with their little joke they are sending some of the most recent submissions in the queue that are rejected because of errors, that they want money, or owl card thingys. what ever they are. I think its cute though. But Im not falling for it.

Kcharles written on 04/01/08 9:04

You guys shouldn't have released this today, everyone thinks it's a joke!

anath written on 04/01/08 9:12

pheonix_song, you are being too modest. Really, 50 cents a chapter? Try 10 dollars a chapter and 50 cents a mistake.*grin* And if there are too many mistakes, you might want extra payment. No grin here, because I am not joking. I've seen editors who work under the rule that too many mistakes should mean higher payment and I honestly believe it fair.
About the new submission rule - of course it is a joke! What else could it be? I am glad the moderators posted it, though, because I was dying to tell them some things, but unfortunately my mother has indoctrinated me with the idea that it's rude to give such opinions without a good reason.
Happy April Fools Day to all of you!

Happy birthday, Gred and Forge!

Honestly, If this is not an april fools joke, than I think it is completely wrong to be charging peoples fanfics. Fanfics are meant to be fun, for fans to expand the universe they love. No one should make money off a fanfic, even those people kind enough to host them. If the site really needs money, than you should as for donations. I am sure many authors would be willing to donate. Charging for mistakes is wrongs. People should get to write and enjoy fanfics for free no matter how good or bad they are and how many mistakes there on. Really I think you should reconcider this policy. Most sites ask for Donations or advertise, do that.

Please say this is an April Fools joke. If not I'm off.

lostinside1 written on 04/01/08 10:58

oh yeah, what if you're English???

PheonixFlamesForever written on 04/01/08 10:59

HAHAHA. April Fools everyone! Aah, this is hilarious. And I must admit, for a tiny second, I believed it. But not for long though.

Some people are taking it so seriously though! Just remember the date and smile.

:)

My friend believed it. I Don't.

Yes! The value of a beta can never be underestimated. I side with the mods 100%. All of you who are posting rants are going to look really mean tomorrow.

doodles357 written on 04/01/08 11:18

wow right! guess we better use spell check!! or we're going to really be broke! nice one!

Heiress_of_Insanity_ written on 04/01/08 11:21

Haha, good one guys! One question: You shall get our addresses how? And if we refuse to pay? What if we CAN'T pay? =p I'd rather not spend the money in my trip-to-Venice account ;) So long and good luck! ~ H_o_I_

magic_child written on 04/01/08 11:22

OK, honestly, I'm getting a little scared. Is this an April Fools' Day joke or what? If it is, that is extremely convincing, but you guys are going to have to do some serious damage control. If it isn't, I'm leaving. I beta my stories to the extreme, but there is no way I'm going to send one in now. Mazel tov, everybody.

Vindictus Viridian written on 04/01/08 11:27

Wow, suddenly betas are really popular people. We should have tried this years ago! Remember, if you have someone beta your story and you still get a fine, you would be entirely justified in making the beta pay it for you.

MithrilQuill written on 04/01/08 11:30

Guys, seriously, why are you all freaking out about this? If you make sure to edit your stuff and get a beta you won't have to pay anything. There's also plenty of help available on the forums and in the "Help" section. Also, it has nothing to do with the mods being American or with your age, I'm not American, or British, and I'm a mod.
Also, remember that we're not getting any access to this money, it all goes to MuggleNet to pay for the server space MNFF takes up so if you think it's too much don't blame us; we fought this long and hard. And, you know, we would absolutely love to not be able to charge anyone because you're all doing an excellent job, but as it is we get hundreds or stories where it's clear that the author hasn't even bothered to read over it once or put it through a spell-checker. And to those saying that when you copy paste from word new errors pop up: that's what the preview button is for, look at if before you click submit!

Gin_PotterGirl written on 04/01/08 11:50

Now I'm scared to beta for people...LOL!

~Michelle :)

anath written on 04/01/08 11:50

If you mods are really serious about that, I can't wait to see how much I have to pay for the mistakes in my newest story, Naming Scorpius. Not that I intend to pay a cent, mind you. I am just curious and I hope you'll satisfy my curiosity before I delete the story, so it would not take any space on the server.

And now I am being completely serious. I wish you mods stop deluding the authors that a beta would solve each and every problem. I happen to know that an author with an amazing story who uses a beta keeps being rejected at least once, before the new chapters could be accepted.

And one last thing. If you want to sound convincing, you should not have sent the last rejection letters with these ridiculous requests for money and so on. Everybody knows that rules cannot have retrospective force. If your authors have submitted something before your change of submission policy, you have to mod it for free or maybe even refuse to mod it. You certainly don't have the right to want money for fics that were submitted under different terms.

magic_child written on 04/01/08 11:52

Also, I think the $50 for dialogue errors is a touch unfair. And high. Nothing should go over $20, maybe.

And have you guys thought about all the exchange rates and stuff? Not everyone here lives in the US. You're going to have a million different currencies to contend with.

Ginny Weasley Potter written on 04/01/08 11:53

Hahaha! Good joke, mods!

Roxy Black written on 04/01/08 12:13

Anath - we understand that Betas cannot solve every problem, but MNFF rejects many fictions every day simply for mistakes that could be spotted by a Beta. After all, if we can pick them up, you can too. If one beta isn't doing the job, try having two or three opinions. And as someone has already said - if your beta tells you your fiction is perfect and you get a fine, feel free to ask them to foot the bill.
