Update in Submissions Policy

by Roxy Black @ 03/31/08 18:14
Hello all,
Thank you for all of your kind words and support over the past few weeks. We’re very glad to say that the update has gone exceedingly well and we’re well on our way to ironing out our problems and glitches and getting the site running smoothly again. However a further problem needs to be addressed.
After much deliberation, the moderators of MNFF have decided that we will need to charge our authors for each mistake they make in their fictions to make the site financially viable. Our site is always expanding and unfortunately cyber-space is money. We have talked long and hard about the best way to go about this and have devised a little price list which we believe to be both fair and reasonable.
Obviously, MNFF is a site which values the promotion of good writing, and so we decided that it would be errors in fictions that we would charge, rather than the fictions themselves. This makes our lives as moderators easier and I hope you’ll agree that the prices we’ve come up with are equivalent to each error.
Please see below for our list of prices:

$1 for each spelling or punctuation mistake
$2 per canon error
$3 for every multiple category submission
$5 for each tiresome cliché
$10 for every incorrect title or poor summary
$20 for characterisation problems
$50 flat rate for dialogue errors

We will flag up the cost of each mistake in the rejection letters you receive with information on how and where you can pay.
Thank you,
~ The MNFF Moderators.

You have got to be kidding me. I thought this site was free. This is so NOT funny. What happens if we don't pay?

Malfoy_Star92 written on 03/31/08 21:58

I was just reading anath's comment and she makes ALOT of good points. You guys are going to lose so many members because of this.

mkmwrite written on 03/31/08 22:00

You've got to be freaking kidding me! You're CHARGING people for mistakes? I can't believe this! I'm out of here! Seriously, you can't expect everything to be perfect! Don't you know how much you hurt people already by rejecting them? Making us pay is adding injury to insult! I seriously HATE the way MNFF is run.

Note to all MNFFer's: You're stupid if you stay here! Absolutely STUPID! I suggest you find another site ASAP. These people shouldn't charge you for mistakes!

Note to mods: Biggest mistake you've ever made, guys. You're going to lose a ton of talented writers like me. I'm heading to FanFiction.net. At least it's free.

mkmwrite written on 03/31/08 22:02

And go ahead, delete me, see if I care. Or am I being charged for that too?

written on 03/31/08 22:03

For those worried about mistakes, why not take the beta/grammar class offered on the Board? Colores is an excellent instructor!

I agree with anath, Malfoy_Star92, and mkmwrite. This is absolutely ridiculous! I am going to find another sight ASAP!

butter_beer_drinker written on 03/31/08 22:08

wow, tempers really do fly around here.

Just a note to those who are taking your stories elsewhere, good luck finding a place.  harrypotterfanfiction is only accepting two certain pairings and they actually DELETED all stories that were not of those ships.  At least MNFF has kept our stories, I'm just glad I had them posted here first.  Sure the fees are a shock but if you think about it it will just make us better writers won't it.  And I really don't think it's nice to be so RUDE, after all tomorrow is Fred and George's birthday so there will be cake, firewhiskey and buterbeer in the common rooms.  Cheer up people, it isn't the end of the world.

mkmwrite written on 03/31/08 22:10

And anath does make many good points. Who are you guys to tell us how to write? We can't be cookie-cutter perfect.

But I guess you're always right, so....

*sarcatic* Yes, let us bow down to the MNFF moderators, the great overlords of fan fiction! The all knowing! Praise them, praise them!!! I have no idea why people like you guys so much.

Pendraegona written on 03/31/08 22:10

Anath's got a point about the fees--it's all so subjective. I second the people who've been saying ads are the way to go.
I'm a broke college kid posting my stories only on MNFF, so this is sort of a forced exile for me. Is there any hope of getting this reversed, or should I start looking for somewhere I like as much as MNFF?

BertieBotsBeans741 written on 03/31/08 22:13

Uh, seriously...it could be a lot worse. I think people need to cool down. Despite the mods insistence that this isn't a joke, well never mind. I'm just saying, a week from now, you'll probably regret reacting so rudely. And if by chance i am wrong, I can deal with that. But you really shouldn't be reacting so horribly.

anath written on 03/31/08 22:22

And for those worried about being charged because of the personal opinion of the moderator who happens to validate our fic, Snapes_secret? What is your suggestion?

I already told you when we had an argument about a fic lof mine being rejected, I work in a publishing house. From time to time I take books to read and give my opinion whether they are worthy being published by the house. Mind you, I am being paid for this and I would fully support a variant that allowes the moderators being paid for checking the fics - it's a tremendous waste of time. I just don't think it's fair to charge the authors, least of all for mistakes that are being defined only by the personal opinion of the moderator. A spelling error is a spelling error and that's a fact. But I've been in a situation where my publishing house was very interected in whether a certain book should be translated and published and they had three people who read it and gave their opinions. I was one of them. Believe it or not, we all had different opinions about the mistakes in description and characterisation. And none of us thought that he was the supreme authority whose opinion is only the right one. But we at least discussed it in front of our boss. You guys give no discussion or anything, you just say 'pay'. Well, I won't pay. I suppose that really makes your lives as moderators easier - one person less to submit stories that should be moderated.

I agree with BertieBotsBeans741. At first, I was completely laughing at these comments; however, there is no need to overreact. You honestly sound like my Spanish teacher, and it's ridiculous. You attack the mods, but look at how much they've done for you, and on top of it, they've been dealing with all of the upgrade problems. So you honestly think they would go through the headache of charges and your complaints? Geesh. And look at what you do when they joke: you act irrational. Take a deep breath and relax.

Viridian written on 03/31/08 22:22

oh GOD! charging for MISTAKES?
ok.. if this is a joke its a really good one. pat yourselves on the back.
but if you're serious, come on, what about the younger writers on the site?!!! i'm fourteen and if these prices are real, how am i supposed to pay??!! charging me if my grammar isn't exactly perfect isnt fair ... i'm sure that my grammar will NEVER be perfect! my chapters get rejected all the time! how do you expect a ninth grader to pay bills issued from a website? i don't even get allowance or anything!!! i guess im overreacting a little bit but you have to admit that $50 flat rate for dialogue errors is pushing it a little...

pheonix_song_719 written on 03/31/08 22:27

But thats where maybe we could start with donations. But honestly I dont think that they would charge. Last year at this time, they threatened to close down the sight for ever. Our lovely mods are just yankin your robe strings for the most part. But seriously...we should be given them some sort of help, I mean they do this work all the time on a volunteer basis!

pheonix_song_719 written on 03/31/08 22:31

aye they all have a point though, I have been trying to post my stories for ever and you always reject them so it doesnt matter any way, Im a mugglenet LOSER! o well, I still love the site anway. Well ttyas

Hey, look. A link that says help. Nifty things like "dialogue help" and "canonization". Oh, it's been there since the beginning of time, you say?

But seriously fellow writers, you've got a lot of resources right here on this site. I won't even begin to list off-site places that can benefit you. These resources, as someone has so nicely pointed out, have been here for AGES. Maybe it's time people finally used them?

Unfortunately, we will not and cannot take age into account. That does not excuse the quality of your writing. There are several 13-year-olds on this site that are simply brilliant authors. Some of them are or were moderators here.

And you all act like moderators are out to get you. We're not. We have better things to do than tax you and see your money flow directly from you to someone who doesn't give a booty about this site.

Speaking as a former mod, I think it's about time they instituted a policy like this. Did you not read the previous news post? 300+ stories in queue - have you any idea how much space that takes up on the server? It's a huge cost, and at least 60% of them won't be validated. Perhaps if you would take the time to employ the services of a good beta and work on following the submission guidelines the fees wouldn't be so high. The sheer number of stories that aren't accepted due to the errors that the mods are charging for would truly shock you. I wish those of you leaving the site the absolute best of luck on your decision, but I can pretty much guarantee that you will not find a site that has such high-quality of fiction. It will be a stunning decrease in the number of reviews you get on your stories as well. I think you should all reconsider. Besides, as has been pointed out, this is not some arbitrary decision on the mods' part to make your lives more difficult; this is something that they are being FORCED to do because of the cost of running this site.
