Advertisements on Mugglenet Fan Fiction

by Marauder by Midnight @ 08/03/08 10:16
Dear loyal Mugglenet Fan Fiction members,

Most of you have probably noticed the sudden appearance of ads on our site. The ads are something new we're experimenting with to cover our share of the server cost. We are, after all, still growing, and the costs of running this site may have exceeded our initial estimates. We're still working out the details and random kinks, and we're having a little trouble editing anything significantly regarding the layout of the ads. What you see right now is not permanent. Rest assured that we will make an announcement when everything is ironed out.

In the meantime, we welcome any opinions you may have regarding the ads. Please refrain from merely complaining about the layout. As we have stated, this problem has already been noted and placed on the top of our list of priorities.

We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you all for bearing with us.

Sincerely,
Mugglenet Fan Fiction Staff

They are quite alright now that they are smaller. I barely notice them.
It's worth having them if it's going to keep the site running.

You can also narrow your viewing window and slide the image over to cover the ads up. Presto! Not a bit distracting.

Javah written on 08/06/08 22:57

The only one of the ads that bothers me at all is the one at the top of the page, the others I don't mind.

AurorKeefy written on 08/07/08 4:26

As much as I firmly believe that advertising is the work of Satan, and I am sickened by every advert and marketing device that crosses my path, having just got Adblock, I'm all for it. I urge people who are having problems to get firefox (which works better than internet explorer for 95% of computers) and get Adblock for it. The difference is amazing.

...oh god, did I just advertise something....

Magical Maeve written on 08/07/08 14:33

Yes, you did Keefy amd shame on you. Clearly the lure of advertising something was too great even for you to resist. :-)

Kcharles written on 08/07/08 14:56

I just thought of something that could solve a lot of problems. I hardly notice the ads on the bottom, so my suggestion is getting rid of the ad on the side, and getting another one on the bottom. And, if you guys get more money when people click on the ads, I'll gladly click on them once and a while if they interest me.

Lyra Lestrange written on 08/07/08 16:50

I would say the one on the bottom isn't a big deal, and the one on the top can be hidden by scrolling. However, the ads are too flashy and do take away from the site's feel. It almost feels like there's no purpose for skins, because no matter what skin we use the colorful ads remove the effect, but that's just my opinion. If the ads can be small and not so bright and flashy, I think that would be much appreciated! :)

Gmariam written on 08/07/08 21:18

While I understand the need for revenue, it sure was nice coming to an ad free site to read fanfic. I agree with all the other suggestions about the layout. I think the ad on the top needs to go first, since it's the first thing someone sees, and that should really be the header, not some random ad! The one on the side would be much better under the navigation bars. It is slowing up my loading so I'd love to ditch the animation as well. And like others, I'd happily pay a fee to get rid of them. Good luck, I know it's tough - thanks for all you do!!
PS. And if there must be ads, I'd love some HP ads; at the very least, please make sure they are always age-appropriate!

rosemerta written on 08/07/08 22:04

I understand the site needs revenue and although I agree the ads can be distracting, they don't bother me. I've learned to ignore flashy ads that don't interest me and I do click on ads for things that pertain to me. My only main concern is appropriateness. Yesterday I was on the site and one of the vertical ads on the left was a scantily clad woman and as this site is frequented by many children, I don't really agree with the use of that one. It didn't offend me at all as an adult but I don't want children seeing those all day. I believe it was an ad for a dating website or some such.

FaunaCaritas written on 08/07/08 22:18

Please, please, please no ads. I will pay not to see them. They are ugly, distracting, processor slowing... I understand that you need money but couldn't you have something like a tee-shirt sale to cover expenses? I'd buy to help support the site.

Anything but the hideous ads!

I love you mods-- I don't mean this personally in any way.

bubblegumpinkhair written on 08/08/08 16:18

They can be a bit annoying but definitely not to the point where I'd avoid the lovely site. Plus whatever pays the bills and keeps you guys up is perfectly fine with me although I wouldn't not be someone to pay a fee as suggested above. I'm poorer than the weasleys lol.

You guys rock. Mods=awesome

-Lucia

bubblegumpinkhair written on 08/08/08 16:36

Double negative above >.< sorry. I meant tot say I would not pay fees. Also just to add something:
After reading everyone else's posts I would just like to say to everyone who is absolutely furious about this whole thing and swearing never to come to this site ever again, I'm sorry but dont you think that you're being a bit dramatic? Scratch that, dont you think that you're being overly-Mrs. Weasley-just-found-out-Fred-and-George-are-opening-a-joke-shop dramatic? You're acting as if this is the end of the world. For goodness sake, they're ads!!! Not like the dark mark!!!!! Think about it: our hardworking mods can either use 'distracting' ads or shut down the site all together. For most people this site is their only home. Taking away the ads might in turn take away a safe haven for many members, myself included. So please, quit complaining and start doing what you came here to do in the first place: reading fanfics from the amazing authors that we have here.

Thank you and sorry if anyone was offended by my bluntness
-Lucia

I'd go with the Google AdSense idea; I use them on my site and it works perfectly.

Hogshire written on 08/11/08 16:48

It's okay to have ads. The one on the left of the page, however, distracts from reading the fanfiction. It's VERY annoying. After reading a chapter or 2, I find myself getting a headache from the animation. Get rid of the one on the left. Put the adds on the top and bottom and you're all set. Google ads are good.

The Salt Lake Queen written on 08/12/08 3:26

I have no problem with the ads being there, but is there any way it would be possible to have smaller ads? It's just that the big ads we have at the moment slow my page-load speed to an excruciating pace.

Sadari Evenstar written on 08/12/08 10:33

Since I use a very tiny laptop (only a seven inch screen), I would love to see the one of the left gone. As it is right now it makes the site nearly unusable unless I am feeling incredibly patient.

lostinside1 written on 08/14/08 7:22

Oki so until lat night I had no issues with the ads since I'm used to them on things like myspace but lastnight the two ads near the top pushed the whole page down so it looked like nothng was loading when it was, I just couldn't see because the ads had taken over.
The site isn't unusable, a bit slow yes, but not unusable.

amzing written on 08/20/08 14:22

i have to say that the ads have made me a little sad that this site will not remain "clean" . I know that mugglenet needs the money, however i feel that its ruinng the experience for me. If there is any other way other than running ads it would be absollutey fantastic. I understand that you guys need the money to keep the site going.
