A really great story, which keeps in with the personalities of the characters. It was very sad, especially how you reminded me how Harry would (ostensibly) be there forever.
Was it Petunia that sent Laura? She was fidgeting around the time Vernon asked who had sent for her.

Author's Response: Hi, Alfred. Thank you so much for leaving a review for my story. Yes, it's a very sad situation that Harry is in, but at least we (if not Harry) know that it will get better soon in a surprising way.

I have never specifically said who submitted Harry's name (I really don't know), but it was not Petunia because she didn't do special things for Harry at any other time, and if she wanted to give Harry good gifts, she could have given them directly (unless, of course, she really did want to give good gifts but thought that Vernon would not approve, so she took a roundabout route, but that's unlikely).

I depicted her as nervous because she wanted to get the visitor out of the house and end the unpleasant scene as quickly as possible. She might have also worried about what the neighbors would think if they saw Laura in her Father Christmas cap, carrying her red flannel sack of gifts, coming up to the door. Welcome to the MNFF archives. As you can see, there are many wonderful authors here, and great stories. I hope you will be inspired to post a story of your own!

This is so sad

Author's Response: Yes, and the sadness is intensified by Harry's not knowing that any of this will ever change. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing this story.

Aww, poor Harry. That was a very good story. I could easily imagine a scene just like that in Sorcerer's Stone.

Author's Response: Thanks for reading and commenting, Linda. Nice to hear from you again. I'm glad you thought it was good. I guess it's not hard to write about Harry's life with the Dursleys before his eleventh birthday--there's only one way that any story could turn out. Vicki

This story was very believably written. I wonder who it was that submitted Harry's name? At first I guessed it was someone in the Wizarding world, simply because no one in the Muggle one seems to care (or else is part of the problem), but it's unlikely a witch or wizard would use a Muggle organization. More likely it's one of his teachers, who wanted to help but, perhaps, didn't want to get involved.

Author's Response: I never had a strong feeling about who submitted his name, but I think you are right, that it was someone at the school, because as you say, members of the wizarding world would not use a Muggle organization, and Harry didn't seem to have many contacts outside the house other than his school. Perhaps it was a school staff member who didn't realize that Harry lived with Dudley Dursley and his parents, who were obviously not impoverished. Thank you for leaving a review, and for saying that the story was believable. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I was hoping that Harry would receive the gifts anyway--that Laura would find a way to give them to him. You conveyed Harry's feelings perfectly. I could feel his tiredness as he had to get up early and help prepare two large meals for people he didn't like anyway. I know that when my children were young I got up early to prepare a holiday meal. I would be tired but I did it because I love them.

Author's Response: Unfortunately, Harry was not fated to receive those gifts, or any other gifts from outsiders. Laura could see that there was no way to salvage the visit, and that any attempt by her to press the matter would only escalate the unpleasantness. I don't recall any point in the books at which Vernon ever becomes actually violent, but Laura has no way of knowing that; from her point of view, he could be dangerous. And if the gifts were given to Harry later, say, at his school, he couldn't take them home openly without having them immediately confiscated (and appropriated by Dudley).

I leave open the issue of whether Laura or her superiors are in a position to report a case of apparent child abuse or neglect, based on what she saw in the house. It is remarkable that Harry's shabby and inappropriate clothes are obvious to everyone at his school, including the staff members, all year long, especially in contrast with the good clothes of Dudley, who lives in the same household, but nobody seems to care enough to pursue the matter.

Thank you so much for reading and reviewing!

well written story that keeps in character with the books

Author's Response: Thank you for your comment. It's always a challenge to write the Dursleys without either sinking into caricature or simply copying what JKR wrote. It is also interesting to contemplate this household between the time of Harry's unexpected arrival and the onset of Chapter Two in the first book.

How sad.

Author's Response: Yes, but I don't really see how the story could have turned out any differently. It pretty much wrote itself, inspired by an experience a long time ago, when my own children were 1 and 4 years old, and Santa Claus came unexpectedly to our house, but on that occasion he did leave presents and everyone was happy.
