Andantino

How quickly she forgets
Those lingering regrets
Of golden-warm memories on an August afternoon,
Of sun-drenched skies, and sands in golds and browns.

How quickly she remembers
Those orange glowing embers
Of dying fires, on evenings of icy funereal chill,
The reading of yet another will.

She thinks,
I have left them all behind,
Out of my mind, out of my mind.

How quickly she decides
That they are on opposite sides,
The people she was born to and the ones she calls her own.

How quickly she denies
Fleeting sadness in her eyes,
How quick she is to say she does not care, she does not care.

She still thinks,
I have left them all behind,
Out of my mind, out of my mind.

How slow she shakes her head,
And leaves the rest unsaid,
She refuses to admit that she has felt a moment's grief.

How slow she is to answer
When he asks if she's a dancer
(She remembers ballroom steps
Oh, those known unknown regrets)

And she thinks,
I have left them all behind,
Out of my mind, out of my mind.

But she dreams of the beaches on that August afternoon,
With sun-drenched skies, and sands in golds and browns,
Her husband is not with her on that golden afternoon,
And she swims towards her sisters and she drowns.
