Without You by MoonysMistress
Summary: Is there a such thing as a poem-fic? If so, this is an example of one: a prose-poem based on the song "Without You" from RENT, a glimpse into the minds of Tonks and Remus as they both fight their feelings for one another. Song lyrics interspersed. Part 6 of the "I Should Tell You" series.

Tonks:
If you saw what you were doing to me
Maybe then you'd relent.
As it is, I can't help but wonder…
Do you miss me?
Do you even remember me?
Am I that forgettable?

– Without you, the ground thaws,
the rain falls, the grass grows. –

Life continues…
I wish that once
I could have shaken that unshakable calm
Made you see from my eyes
See the world from behind a veil,
A pearly fog of perfect tears.

– The earth turns, the sun burns,
But I die without you. –

Everything hurts now
Every assignment without you
Every knowing glance
From every knowing person…
I wish I could just be numb
To you, to them, to everything
It would hurt a little less.

– Without you, the breeze warms,
The girl smiles…–

I don't remember how to smile.
I can't recall what joy feels like.
For the longest time,
My only companion has been
This backbreaking sorrow.

– The crowds roar, the days soar –

Each minute lasts a lifetime
The hours are unspeakable.
I wish time would fly faster
Because with its passage, perhaps
I will learn to live without you.

Remus:
I miss you, even though
I never had you in the first place.
I could have. No, I couldn't.
You never understood why I did it
I know you didn't.
You watched my mouth move
Without ever once comprehending.

– But I know blue, only blue,
Lonely blue, within me blue –

You think of how it wounds you,
But have you ever spared a thought for me?
A thought for how I feel right now?
For what it feels like to kill a spirit?
How hard it is to say no?
To constantly deny the one thing
Perhaps the only thing you've ever
Truly wanted?
No. Lovely young woman,
You can only think of your heartbreak.
And I can hardly blame you.

– Without you, the eyes gaze
The legs walk, the lungs breathe –

I've never wanted to die.
For all my troubles,
I've never wished for death.
Part of me does now
Anything to escape those eyes
Haunted and hollow
Reproaching me for my choice.
Don't make me second-guess
I haven't the strength for that
Any doubt will make me bend.
I can't bend. For your sake.

– The mind churns, the heart yearns
The tears dry without you –

I try to stay focused
But I only think about you.
I try to ignore this deadly love
But it only grows stronger
And with its strength, more secret.
How do I escape?
With each passing day
The question begins to shape:
How do I live without you?

Both:
– Life goes on –
I'm trudging onward
– but I'm gone –
fading to gray
– 'cause I die –
I'm dying
Without you.
