Into the Fire by clumsywerewolf2438
Summary: McGonagall sits in Dumbledore's empty office hours after his death and wonders what will become of the Order and everyone else who fights against Voldemort.

Oddly enough, this story was inspired by the following quote:

Were a star quenched on high,
For ages would its light,
Still travelling downward from the sky,
Shine on our mortal sight.
So when a great man dies,
For years beyond our ken,
The light he leaves behind him lies
Upon the paths of men.
-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Author's Notes:
Thanks to voldiegirl for editing this for me. This poem is dedicated to my friend who we all call Dumbledore. He left (not like the real Dumbledore) and we all miss him so this is in honor of him.
The sky is dark, the moon is new.
What hope do we have here?
All of us are lost, now, without you.
Will any of us survive another year?

So many questions, so much death,
I look out at the stars in despair;
As much as I hope and hold my breath,
There are no answers—no solutions—there

I need you here—alive—with me.
There is so much I once could do,
But it seemed your presence was the key.
The strongest have been affected by this darkness, too.

You should have seen their fear,
The way it brought some together,
The way it forced others to reject what you—and they—held dear.
But, alas, you have left this world forever.

I hope that I have found a way
To prove your points and protect your memory.
I stood up for your beliefs and hope that I can repay
For all the time and friendship that you have given me.

But our only hope
Now has lost all himself
With only your final instructions can he through darkness grope
And thus defeat the Dark Lord in all his cunning stealth.

Even the very bravest amongst us—
Those who are noble, kind and wise—
Have pushed aside the ones they love, thus,
In pushing them down, letting evil rise.

How could it have come to this?
What more can any of us do?
There is not one sould who does not miss
Our faithful friend the phoenix, he left along with you.

Deception, guile, cunning lies:
How could we have had a guess
That one you trusted was a predator in disguise?
Is there no escaping this mess?

Out of the frying pan and into the fire—
It is like they always say—
We are stuck here in this mire
For you, my friend, died this day.
