Excruciatingly Painful by xxbabewithbrainsxx
Summary: In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, five men deal with remorse, yet in completely different ways. It affects the soul, mentality and even the body. This poem explores the way these five men cope with wrong actions and the guilt that follows it.

By the way, I'm not J K Rowling. I doubt you're surprised. All reviews receive a response!

Story Notes:
Just a little poem that I thought of. I've been thinking about what Hermione once said about remorse, how the pain of it can kill you. So I've examined how five men deal with remorse of some kind. It’s my first attempt at HP poetry. I hope you like it!

P.S. I heart reviews!

Author's Notes:
“Ron: "Isn’t there any way of putting yourself back together?"
Hermione: "Yes, but it would be excruciatingly painful… Remorse. You’ve got to really feel what you’ve done.”

Chapter Six, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Page 103
Remorse: a strong sense of guilt
Accountable for someone’s demise
The inner being begins to wilt
While watching life leave someone’s eyes

The same thing, once again
He felt responsible for his death
He was protected by thirteen women and men
Yet one had to draw his last breath
“Constant vigilance” was his catchphrase
In his low, familiar growl
And they mourned for him that day
When he died along with the owl

Remorse: to feel deep shame
In the actions one has done
To realise one is actually to blame
To see what one has become

He found out his wife was with child
And he took it the wrong way
As the fear of his child being wild
Took his common sense away
Without warning, he had gone
Without so much as “goodbye”
It took this coward’s friend’s son
To make him go back by asking “why?”

Remorse: an expression of sorrow
To cling to one like a hair shirt
To be reminded today and tomorrow
To feel disgusted, to feel like dirt

Because what he did was unforgivable
Almost as bad as those curses
He just felt so miserable
Until at last he followed his urges
When he heard her say his name
And, God, he missed that voice
So he dithered and at last he came
It was certainly the best choice

Remorse: paying one’s atonement
Trying to make amends
Saying sorry being one of the components
But it becomes too much between friends

There was no question of his treachery
That was, at least, crystal clear
He had wormed his way out cleverly
Out of disloyalty and fear
Yet he had prevented his death
He couldn’t deny that
It was commanding him, his head
Yet with his own hand his life was sapped

Remorse: a powerful emotion
More than just a feeling
Not a spell, charm or potion
The only way of healing

He had already split his soul
Not just two, but seven parts
There was only one way to make it whole
This time, his enemy held the cards
He said, “try for some remorse!”
For the terrible things he had caused
His voice exuded near force
As he talked to this so-called “Lord”

He had a chance to feel guilt and shame
It was his ticket to stay alive
A chance to redeem his hated name
Yet he was the lone one of the five
To refuse to feel for what he’d done
He decided to remain disdainful
He couldn’t feel sorry for what he’d become
Because that would be excruciatingly painful.
End Notes:
I hope you enjoyed that! See that little box down there? It needs filling. The only profit I get. :D
