Don't You Remember

How could he have known?
That was fourteen years ago:
You clothed him and called him
Your pride, your joy, your son.
Three names lovingly invoked;
Three names that were mere sound.
There was no worry, no hurry.
Oh, he’ll grow up one day,
You said; he’ll know why we gave him
Three names.
He’ll remember.

He doesn’t.

He doesn’t, but his thoughts are free.
He uses them to name him names,
He uses them to hear you laugh
And sing and soothe him back to sleep
The way you sing and soothe the walls.

You clothe no son, no pride, no joy;
He warms himself with candy wrappers
Sewn up by a single thread:
Don’t you remember, oh, don’t you?
