Author's Notes:
Thanks go to Julia/the opaleye for looking this over and making some helpful suggestions.

The stars above litter the sky, millions of miles away yet looming large —
Infinite watchmen that follow me everywhere, inspecting every move I make;
They know what I’ve done.

The tedium of sunlight buries my shame, yet when the day is over,
Nightfall spreads its blanket of eyes that never blink,
And I remember everything.

I pull back the covers of the bed I made all those years ago,
And I think of her eyes: blinded by my treachery, unseeing.
I hope my own fall dark upon the close.

Yet now her eyes stalk me in my precious, peaceful daylight,
Burning bright underneath that familiar black hair I hate so much,
Surviving just to spite me.

But from my task, I dare not stray, for I will feel those eyes again.
Her eyes, their eyes, and all my celestial jailers remind me
Of what can never be forgotten.
