Chapter Notes: My first attempt at a sestina...please be nice!

This poem was inspired by "Like the Stars" by Diamond Quill. An awesome story - go read it!

In Different Constellations

Stars lie scattered across the night sky,
Twinkling, rising and falling like drops in a pool of tears.
Hushed stillness in the quiet countryside is interrupted
by a wail of sorrow; diffused with anger, tinged with regret
that things had to be this way. Angry at Fate,
the past he cannot change; what could have been             has gone.

Wind whips away nature’s goodness until it’s gone;
He blinks away tears, hums blindly at the sky,
Attempts a brief smile that gives way to a grimace at Fate
and inevitably, comes the rush of sorrow; fresh flood of tears
that splash angrily to the ground. There is no regret
for what he has done, but still, he shakes his fists at life’s interruption –

Fate severs ties, breaks links, spills blood of Time interrupted,
Summer-days, laughter-days, when thoughts flowed; are gone.
When once so alike, close in life dreams and in blood, they regret
the separation. Never imagined the possible, in days under azure skies,
Never, until clouded dreams,       slowly        splattered tears,
Enough to fill an ocean; they stand, dis-united, two sides             spilt by Fate.

Huddled tight, close, faces of tears, they wonder if Fate
meant for it to be? Shouts break the walls; pierce the heart and thoughts interrupting,
The mocking songs of breaking glass melt into more tears
about the family, that was          really only two of us       now long gone
Just like stars that blink once, live for their moment in the dark sky,
Oceans apart, worlds separate, separately grieving, saturated with regret.

Fists of anger, bitter hatred, penetrate like poison that regrets
ever the sharing of blood. Differences discovered, disunited by Fate
separate in black and white, light to dark, taking opposite places in the sky
where they will lurk in enemy trenches firing bullets; no interruption,
No ceasefire ‘til the backwards door forever closes, the light forever gone
and darkness separates two different strangers             faces alike with tears.

He breathes in sorrow-mingled hope, wipes away tears, but still, tearing
apart inside. Ahead lies the future, and behind
                                                      – where he will not glance back –             looms regret
that Time, set in solid stone, cannot be changed. What’s gone –
has gone, wheels rolling forwards as he approaches the next fate
where no shouts nor hatred await, but kind hearts, no broken walls nor thoughts interrupted.

(He knocks, and the wind whips away his final fears as he hums to the sky.)

Stars twinkle in orderly fate, falling, splashing, sinking into the pool of tears,
Ripples in time are interrupted by the raging silence that no longer regrets
events of passing; in the sky’s constellations, show what was never to be…
                                                                                                 inevitably,
                                                                                                                              gone.
