A Sly Serpent's Decree

Alone I was, alone and lost,
My soul a grey shadow,
Spending days in a waking sleep,
Nights under candles low.

I sat all day, and half the night,
And spilled out all of me.
Talking to him just seemed so right -
A serpent's sly decree.

My words were marked with midnight ink,
And his were much the same.
When I woke, I could barely think,
For his voice called my name.

His voice, I found, was calm and cool,
His face a lovely sight.
With him, I knew but happiness...
His pet was not a fright.

I told him of all my troubles.
He listened with kind ears.
Writing of comfort and laughter,
He hid away all fears.

And after we would talk awhile,
He would twist things just so,
Till I began to be confused...
Were friends a hidden foe?

Eventually, all my past
I slowly did forget
Caught up inside the illusions
That his lies had beget.

My old loves and my old friendships,
All were suspect to him.
His keen, witty judgment charming,
So I followed his whim.

I thought I loved the ruthless snake,
Until he turned to bite.
And then through shadows in my wake,
Past love returned to sight.

I felt him fight, prayed for good luck,
And wished that I could see,
What marvels that through all this muck,
Were sure to come to be.

And then I felt a sudden surge,
The pull came to a halt.
My nemesis, my once-loved one,
Fell to dust, fine as salt.

Yet day and night, I still await
For him to go away.
I feel my mind open a slate
Of whom he wants to slay.

I know the names, know of the doom,
I feel it clear as day.
But how can you stand in a room,
And to them all this say?

A/N: Thanks a million to Kumy for being woderful and BETAing this for me!
