Only the Gryffindor seventh years knew truly what was going on. That Madeline really wasnât the person everyone thought she was, and that sheâd been refused. That Sirius Black didnât want to sleep with her. That things were not at all as they appeared.
âWhy canât they just accept what happened and move on?â Ellen muttered angrily at lunch, glaring down at Madeline, sitting a few seats away, and who was staring deadpan at her food, silently putting it in her mouth and mechanically chewing. It was a warm October day, a week since the incident had occurred; Sirius had already shoveled Sheppardâs Pie into his mouth and departed to âgo study.â
Lily shrugged. âBecause, theyâre Madeline and Sirius. Theyâre stubborn gits who do not accept things that âjust happen.â Plus, it didnât âjust happen.ââ
Alice looked confused. âWhat do you mean?â
Sighing, Lily lowered her voice to a whisper. âMadeline wanted to do it. Sirius didnât. Madeline isnât used to being rejected, and Sirius hasnât ever been encountered with a situation heâd have to refuse!â Sitting back satisfied, she continued to butter a roll. âAnyway,â she pressed, âI think soon thisâll all be over with anyway. How long have they ever not spoken? A week and a half. Itâs been a week. I give them two more days.â
âI doubt it,â James muttered. She glanced at James, who had been watching her from Ellenâs left side. Their eyes met for a moment, and then she pulled hers away. He noticed before taking a sip from his goblet that she didnât blush.
âYou do?â Frank said from Aliceâs side. âI think Lilyâs got a point there.â
âThey donât know how to be angry with each other,â Alice agreed. âNot seriously angry. Not like this.â
James sighed. âHonestly? I know Sirius as well as I know myself. And youâre right â“ he doesnât know how to deal with this. And so heâll just drag it out, fearing the day where heâll be paired with Madeline Murphy in Potions.â
Two days later, James sat triumphantly in the Gryffindor common room, smiling grimly at Lily. âWhat did I tell you?â He said. Surely enough, Sirius had avoided Madeline all day; at break, when theyâd gone to the lake to quiz each other on Transfiguration, Sirius had not-so-politely excused himself when Madelineâs tall and slender figure appeared on the hill, coming down towards them. Now, James, Lily, Alice, Frank, and Peter sat alone in the common room just before dinner.
âSo your pleased, then?â Lily snapped. âThat theyâre not speaking?â
James was caught off guard. âW-what?â Lily rolled her eyes, and James quickly changed the subject. âWhere are Remus and Ellen?â
âNo doubt off making out,â Frank grinned, elbowing Peter in the side. Peter gave them a small, shaky smile, strained as if he was unsure why he was being included in this conversation. Peter generally seemed unsure why he was included in any conversation: James, Sirius, and Remus were the coolest of the cool. Frank, too, even. But most people ignored or avoided Peter. He was âweird,â a small and nervous boy with watery eyes and pale hair. They thought he was strange.
Except the Marauders. They had accepted him day one.
âI doubt it,â Alice said, pulling Peter back to earth. She glared a little at Frank. âEllen wouldnât.â
âAnd yet I think when it comes to Remus, she would,â Lily said, surprising everyone.
âWhat are you talking about?â Alice lookedshocked. âYouâre not serious!â
Lily shrugged. âYes I am. And I think theyâre getting serious themselves.â James and Frank exchanged a glance: could she be right? Lily saw their faces and sighed. âItâll be fine. Honestly. Theyâve liked each other for seven years now.â She lowered her voice and added confidently, âAnd I donât think anythingâll happen like Sirius and Madeline.â
âYou just said theyâre probably making out!â James snapped at her. âMake up your mind, Evans.â
Lily glared at him. âExcuse me, Potter, did you say something? I only heard excessively annoying whining.â She stood up. âAlice dâyou want to come with me to the library? I really want to get that Charms essay finishedâŚâ
Alice jumped up. âSure, letâs go.â The two girls grabbed their bags and quickly left the common room. Frank slid down onto the couch next to Remus, taking Lilyâs place.
âWhy canât things just be simple anymore?â He muttered, running a hand through his floppy brown hair.
âThis is only the beginning, Frank,â James murmured quietly, eyes trained on Peterâs profile. âThis is only the beginning.â
And he was never more right.
Meanwhile, Ellen Young sat with her head on Remus Lupinâs shoulder, never feeling more at peace. They were outside in the courtyard, just below a window, talking the night away. That is, until dinner.
They had grown quiet, however. But then Ellen said, âWhy do you hang out with Peter?â
Remus glanced at her, look confused. âI donât â“ â
Horrified at what she said, Ellen clapped a hand to her mouth and gasped, âNo, I didnât mean it â“ I didnât mean that! Iâm sorry, Remus!â
âItâs okay,â he shrugged, pulling her closer to him, his arm around her shoulder. âI know what you mean.â Remus sighed, and then said, âI think....please donât tell anyone thisâŚbut Iâm worried about Peter.â
âHow do you mean?â
âWellâŚheâs been acting kind of st â“ â But he never got to finish his thought, because at that moment, Sirius burst into the courtyard, looking furious. Sure enough, Madeline was following him, screaming.
ââŚdonât you even care?â she was saying.
Sirius spun around. âOf course I care!â He spat angrily. They were close enough for the hidden couple to hear every word. âWhy do you think I didnât â“ â
He quickly swallowed his words as Madeline advanced. From what Remus could see from where he sat in the dying light, she was fuming.
âYou care about someone?â She snarled, poking her finger in Siriusâ chest. Ellen and Remus exchanged a glance. âHoly Merlin, the world is coming to an end. Listen, Black. I know youâve neverâŚyou knowâd before. Nor have I.â Sirius opened his mouth, but Madeline shook her head. âSo I wanted you to be my first. âCauseâŚI think I love you.â
Ellen let out a gasp, and Remus quickly clapped a hand to her mouth, but it was too late: the damage was done, and both Madeline and Sirius turned to where they sat hidden by the oncoming darkness, enveloped in the shadow.
Sirius bolted towards them, shouting, âYou had better show yourself before I fucking hex you!â As he ran, he pulled out his wand.
âPADFOOT!â Remus bellowed, jumping up just as Siriusâ face began to shine through the gloom. Sirius skidded to a halt, and muttered, âLumos.â The wand tip ignited and he saw that it was Remus and Ellen, who was struggling to her feet.
âWell, then,â Sirius said, smiling smugly. âSorry to interrupt things.â
âEllen? Remus?â It was Madeline, standing at Siriusâ shoulder. âWhat are you guys â“ oh.â Her eyes fell on Remusâ hand snaked around Ellenâs. âSorryâŚ!â
âDonât be,â Remus said quickly.
Then Madelineâs eyes narrowed. âIf you tell a single bloody soul what I said, I swear on all things good and chocolaty I will curse you.â
âWell now that youâve sworn on chocolate, we know youâre serious,â Remus muttered. Madeline took an angry step towards him, but Remus threw his hands up in surrender. âJoking, joking. I promise.â
âOf course I do, too.â Ellen nodded vigorously, smiling shyly at Madeline, who seemed satisfied. âWell, Iâm hungryâŚRemus, you coming?â
He quickly caught Siriusâ eye; the other boy nodded his head a fraction of an inch, and Remus said, âYeahâŚletâs go.â
Sirius and Madeline turned to watch Remus and Ellen walk across the courtyard and get swallowed up by shadow, holding hands.
