Soiled

A thick fog buried deep
Beneath the dry, stony soil,
Suppresses the progress of
Any seeds of truth that toil,
Obscures the weedy secrets
Slowly winding around the hidden rockbeds,
Refuses to allow the single growth
Of a kind, caring lily hued a vibrant red.

And blackened roots are surely dying
For the dark vermin reigning below
Annihilate the nutrients, commandeer the
Cracking sediment, interrupt water flow,
Allowing the fungi, the poisons, to settle in.
The stale air is rank with abandonment, decay
As the cruel sun withholds warmth, light, and still
The sweet flower try its luck, only to face rejection, shunted away.

And the blossoming, bright lily
Finds purchase elsewhere,
And the failing garden now floods with
Every acid rain drop, mugging the air.
He pines for her beauty, her eminence, her grace
And dejection seeps deeper into soiled veins,
For when his master slays her sturdy stem
Does the garden realize no such goddess will bless him again.
Chapter Endnotes: This was originally going to be about keeping secrets buried beneath the soil, but it worked out far better to use this analogy as a means of portraying how Snape feels. :)
