Story Notes:

This poem was written for the 2013 Carol Challenge, modeled after a carol unfamiliar to me, "Jesus Christ, The Apple Tree", following the same themes as in the five verses of the original.
A sturdy tree against the gathering storm
becomes our shield, protection from the form
of growing death and darkness. In the strife
that must ensue, it is our tree of life.
To what else can we cling? There is for me
but one hope, Harry Potter, holly tree.

His steadfastness and ingenuity
excel all others. Noble deeds that he
achieved and gained are more than I can praise.
His fame will long endure. In future days
these times will be remembered. Tales will be
of glorious Harry Potter, holly tree.

I looked for safety in obedience,
in silence, in avoiding prominence.
But dearth of action does not quell the wrong.
If cowards, we allow it to grow strong.
His fearless heart must our example be.
We follow Harry Potter, holly tree.

I weary of resisting, night and day,
the growing power of evil, the decay
of good and right and virtue. Let me rest
one single moment, trusting that his quest
will do what I cannot, will shelter me.
I trust in Harry Potter, holly tree.

I see the scarlet-berried holly tree
outside the castle. While it stands, for me
hope lives. The red like blood. The prickly leaves
like wounds we suffer daily. Faith perceives
the day must come, and soon, when we shall see
victorious Harry Potter, holly tree.
