I've got a Twitter specifically for writing fic @AcaciaCarter. Read about me writing fic that you will read! So meta! Seriously, though, if you're interested in my writing process, that's where you'll want to go.

Everyone has a favourite character. Even if you say you don't, you do. Mine is Neville.

In school, I WAS Neville. Never particularly good in classes, trying as hard as I can to not be noticed so I wouldn't be made fun of. I grew out of it, as Neville did, though I didn't have to be set on fire and kill a giant snake with a sword of mythic proportions to do it. Since I grew up with Harry Potter, I grew up alongside Neville - and always had a soft spot for him.

Not that you'd be able to tell by the way I treat him. Poor boy can't get a break.

Most of my fics are stand-alone and have no relation to one another. However, I do have one continuing storyline that is internally consistent: Long Way Down. This story arc begins with An Ode to Living, continues with The Breaking Point, goes on to include Polarity, grows darker in Tempus Vernum, and is concluded with Beyond the Pale (not yet posted). At least, that's the plan - we may see additional one-shots added to it as time goes on.

One of my favourite approaches to fic is to stick as closely to canon as possible, despite the very non-canon things that happen within them. I like my fics to be something that COULD have happened and don't contradict canon outright. You'll find that if you squint, you can often insert them into the canon HP timeline quite well. Most of them, anyway.

Bliss by lucca4

Rated: 6th-7th Years •
Summary:

Cho Chang is contently married to the Muggle man of her dreams (or so she tells herself). The Wizarding World and all the pain it brought is far behind her -- at least, that is what she believes until she bumps into an old classmate.

Pansy Parkinson weaves her way through bars and men (in that order) and tries to forget which side she was on. She needs help, but she isn’t sure how.

Perhaps, it takes recognising sorrow to move on to bliss.

This story is for the GH Cotillion Challenge. Thank you, Jess and Viv, for setting such an ingenious challenge!

Third Place winner, along with Paris by welshdevondragon.

I am speechless. There is nothing coherent that comes to mind when I try to think about what to write here. You've taken two characters I've never had reason to like and made me care about them. You've made me hurt for Cho and wish that she finds freedom in her new situation, and you've made me hope that Pansy has found something other than oblivion to fill her nights.

This was absolutely masterfully written, and it's a beautiful piece.

Author's Response: Your review has left me speechless :) Honestly, thank you so much! All I could ever want for this story is for readers to empathize with or connect with Cho and Pansy and it makes me so very happy to hear that you have. Thank you again for such a heart-warming review! xx Ariana

Sweet Transvestite by welshdevondragon

Rated: 3rd-5th Years •
Summary:
How else would he ever be able to stand in front of his father in fishnets, six inch heels, a short black dress and make up?

Hugo Weasley has a secret, and he doesn’t want his father to find out. However, he may have no say in the matter.

This story is written for lucca4/Ariana who is a wonderful writer and was lovely and enthusiastic about the December Drabble that prompted this idea. This story does, surprisingly, contain discussion of and mention of transvestism. Since that’s not an official warning, I thought it worth mentioning.

This is welshdevondragon of Gryffindor writing for the Fiendish Firsties Great Hall School of Mischief challenge. The title is from the song Tim Curry sings in The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Oh, your Ron was lovely. As Ron goes, anyway. ;) I especially liked how relieved he was that it hadn't been some big secret forever, that he wouldn't have been able to bear it if his son hadn't felt able to come to him for years and years. And I love the idea of Hugo just assuming that Hermione knows everything anyway.
A lot of little phrases in here made me smile - the thinking of the previous generation as "the adults" no matter how old Hugo got, and coming out as bisexual at the dinner table. The mention of Seattle got a smile from me as well, for some reason I can't fathom.
I don't think this was at all flat - the arc flowed nicely and everything was neatly contained in the narrative. And nobody died or was dismembered or abandoned or any other horrible thing! Fun little read, thanks for sharing with us. :)

Uncommon Friends by Gmariam

Rated: 3rd-5th Years • Past Featured Story
Summary: When Draco Malfoy walked into a shop one night looking for help, he found the last person he would have expected: Neville Longbottom. To Neville's surprise, Draco accepted his help. But neither anticipated that one chance meeting would be the beginning of a friendship that would last until the very end.

Do you know how hard it is to keep little squeals of joy sequestered at work?

I'm thoroughly enjoying your take on Neville, and the dynamic between him and Draco. They're those friends that are at each other so frequently you wonder how they haven't split up yet, but you get the feeling they'll be snarking at each other when they're old and grey. Or, well. Would be. If.

Yeah. If. On that note, looking forward to your next chapter. :)

Half-life by welshdevondragon

Rated: 3rd-5th Years • Past Featured Story
Summary:

Neville has the rest of his life ahead of him, but all he can do is look back. Molly feels as though she has already lived, and will spend the rest of her life sifting through her memories and regrets and never living in the moment.

AU in that Arthur Weasley dies in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. This is Jamie/AcaciaCarter’s and Soraya/babewithbrains’ fault, and therefore I present it to them.

Your Neville. Just... your Neville. His confusion after sleeping with Romilda. His attachment to his parents. You've got him down and I love him.
Molly's quiet desperation is lovely, as well. I normally don't read AUs, because they're rarely done as well as you've done this. Watching Molly try to piece together her family after Arthur's death was heartbreaking, but there was a certain grim determination to it that kept her from seeming completely helpless - which is definitely in line with her character.
The discussion about half-lifes was a little odd, but made sense once I thought about it for a while. Not a concept I ever thought I'd see come up in a Potter fic. :)
And like Soraya, I'm relieved that you didn't ship them!

Wandwork by Gmariam

Rated: 3rd-5th Years •
Summary: The remarkable story behind Griselda Marchbanks' enigmatic reference to all those things Albus Dumbledore could do with a wand.
Reviewer: Acacia Carter Signed
Date: 07/09/12 Title: Chapter 1: Remarkable

Now, now, how was any of this my fault? ;)
The running internal dialogue was greatly enjoyable, particularly the double entendrés throughout. Stroke for stroke, indeed. ;)
I do kind of hope that he met up with her in London, before everything started to go pear-shaped for him. Not that he'd have any interest in her, of course, but perhaps he could demonstrate a little more for her...

Author's Response: Hey! Thanks for reading this! I don't think you were responsible, really - I just said you helped. I believe Soraya actually uttered the words "I dare you." I'm so glad you picked up some of those double entendres. I giggled a lot as I was writing this. In some ways it was more fun than if they actually *had*. As for them hooking up later...well, he graduates and falls in love with Grindlewald only to get burned, so I rather doubt it. But as I still have a hard time giving up the wife I wrote him five years ago, who knows what happened in his early years? ;) Thanks again for reading this, I really appreciate the review! ~Gina :)
