Thanks for the review! It's supposed to be left in the air, leaving the reader some freedom with imagination. Also, Ron was on the train because he was on his way home, he's been away for work. He's just fallen into the habit of using a train. Hermione uses the train ride to get away from her life sometimes, often riding alone and looking at scenery.
