I've got a Twitter specifically for writing fic @AcaciaCarter. Read about me writing fic that you will read! So meta! Seriously, though, if you're interested in my writing process, that's where you'll want to go.

Everyone has a favourite character. Even if you say you don't, you do. Mine is Neville.

In school, I WAS Neville. Never particularly good in classes, trying as hard as I can to not be noticed so I wouldn't be made fun of. I grew out of it, as Neville did, though I didn't have to be set on fire and kill a giant snake with a sword of mythic proportions to do it. Since I grew up with Harry Potter, I grew up alongside Neville - and always had a soft spot for him.

Not that you'd be able to tell by the way I treat him. Poor boy can't get a break.

Most of my fics are stand-alone and have no relation to one another. However, I do have one continuing storyline that is internally consistent: Long Way Down. This story arc begins with An Ode to Living, continues with The Breaking Point, goes on to include Polarity, grows darker in Tempus Vernum, and is concluded with Beyond the Pale (not yet posted). At least, that's the plan - we may see additional one-shots added to it as time goes on.

One of my favourite approaches to fic is to stick as closely to canon as possible, despite the very non-canon things that happen within them. I like my fics to be something that COULD have happened and don't contradict canon outright. You'll find that if you squint, you can often insert them into the canon HP timeline quite well. Most of them, anyway.

Thank you to the ever inestimable Soraya for the beta and Ellie for helping me reconstruct the story after my planning file was corrupted.

The Stars, They Burn by Acacia Carter

Rated: 3rd-5th Years • Past Featured Story
Summary: As Sirius falls through the veil, four memories are forced to the forefront of Remus's mind.

A birthday present for the ever wonderful Soraya, whose praises I have sung so many times I have run out of words. Happy Birthday, Soraya - have a good cry. :P

To Fear the Flame by Acacia Carter

Rated: 3rd-5th Years • Past Featured Story
Summary: Neville hadn't expected his boggart to ever change. Perhaps he should have done.

Can't Fight the Moonlight by Acacia Carter

Rated: 6th-7th Years • Past Featured Story
Summary: A life-changing disaster at work drives Neville Longbottom to seek aid from the only ally he thinks he can trust - Hermione Weasley. She's more than willing to help, but keeping it a secret puts nearly as much of a strain on herself and her family as it does on Neville, though for entirely different reasons.

------

I'm not JKR. (I don't think JKR would get such a kick out of putting Neville in such horrid situations.) She owns the Potterverse and everything in it.
Title and various chapter names are from the LeeAnn Rimes song Can't Fight the Moonlight.
Once again, this is a Brand New Neville, completely different to every other Neville you've read about from me. And if you're curious about following along, find yourself a moon phase chart from 2007.
Many thanks and delicious baked goods (but not bagels) to the Marvellous Maple for the beta.

Wind's Nocturne by Acacia Carter

Rated: 3rd-5th Years • Past Featured Story
Summary: There is magic the likes of which humans can barely remember and seldom experience. There is, however, a handful of men privileged enough to experience a part of it: the Dryad's Consorts.

Written for the last third of Madame Alex's Character Triathalon!

--

Many thanks to Maple for the beta; I couldn't see myself sending this one to anyone else.

Anything you recognise is JKR's. Anything you don't recognise is possibly mine, but probably JKR's.

--

Wood-nymphs, more commonly known as Dryads, are first and last mentioned in the Potterverse by Fleur in Goblet of Fire. In Greek mythology, these cunning magical creatures are entirely female, and must capture and seduce human men in order to bear daughters and heirs to their forests. In other works of literature they are described as bold and highly territorial, with voracious, er, "appetite" for particular intimate activities. So, basically a shy Herbologist's every fantasy...

Safe House by Acacia Carter

Rated: 1st-2nd Years •
Summary: Among the green and living things was the safest he'd ever felt, but was it where he belonged?

This is Acacia Carter of Hufflepuff, writing for the Great Hall Rainbow Mini-Challenge.

Another companion in The Intervention continuity, taking place during the beginning of Scorpius's third year.

Many thanks to Maple, beta extraordinaire.

Good Enough by Acacia Carter

Rated: 1st-2nd Years •
Summary: O.W.L. results have arrived, and Scorpius is certain his parents will be less than pleased.

-----

This is Acacia Carter of Hufflepuff, writing for the Minor Character Challenge of July 2012.

Many thanks to Julie/Peppermint Toads for the beta, Jess for the nudge to write Scorpius, Gina for the nudge to write this Scorpius, and Soraya for listening to my angst.

Please note that this is a companion piece to another of my works, An Intervention. It can be read alone, but if you are interested in Scorpius's past, the beginnings of it are available on my author page.

It's not my fault I seem to be incapable of writing a story without Neville in it. Really, it's not my fault this time - blame Gina.

Polarity by Acacia Carter

Rated: 6th-7th Years •
Summary: Draco ought to have expected he'd end up dying facedown in an alley, but nothing could have prepared him for the events or the friendships that would follow.

Draco/Neville, with references to previous Draco/Harry and Neville/Harry, as well as references (nothing explicit, merely allusions) to non-consensual memories.

Beta'd by the inestimable Soraya, to whom I owe at least three tonnes of baked goods by now.

I'm still not JKR.

Third in the Long Way Down continuity, this story takes place between the events of The Breaking Point and Tempus Vernum.

Strong Enough to Break by Acacia Carter

Rated: 3rd-5th Years • Past Featured Story
Summary: It had been three years since his wife's death, but the first woman to make him feel something is the last woman he'd have thought. The fact that he's closer in age to her father than to her does not help matters.

Otherwise known as All Soraya's Fault.

Important note: I used the Student/Teacher warning as a precaution; the relationship in this story is between a teacher and his former student, for whom he had no feelings while she was under his tutelage. Just to be clear.

Another important note: I'm not JKR. She has a much nicer house.

Badges by Acacia Carter

Rated: 6th-7th Years • Past Featured Story
Summary: It is the beginning of seventh year, and Neville has had just about enough of Amycus Carrow.

This is Acacia Carter of Hufflepuff writing for the first third of the Character Triathalon, for the "missing moment" prompt.

Many thanks to Jess for the lightning-fast beta.

His and Hers by Acacia Carter

Rated: 3rd-5th Years • Past Featured Story
Summary: In a perfect world, Neville and Hannah's wedding would go off without a hitch. This is not a perfect world.

Bless You by Acacia Carter

Rated: 3rd-5th Years •
Summary: Neville enjoys a quiet moment... until it all goes awry.

Tempus Vernum by Acacia Carter

Rated: 3rd-5th Years • Past Featured Story
Summary: Neville is a herbologist, not an undercover Auror, and certainly not a pharmacological and criminal mastermind. But somehow he's been swept up in a plot much bigger than he is and he must be both - and he only has until springtime to make good on his promises, one way or another.

This is Acacia Carter of Hufflepuff, writing for the Great Hall School of Mischief challenge.

--- I'm not JKR. Everything in this universe belongs to her.

This story comes fourth in my Long Way Down continuity.

A gold medal and a year's supply of Rice-a-Roni to my lovely beta, Soraya/xxbabewithbrainsxx.

The Lady Doth Protest Too Much by Acacia Carter

Rated: 1st-2nd Years • Past Featured Story
Summary: Really, must I endure the nauseating burden of owing the tinned twit a favour?
- - -
Written, hurriedly and frantically, for the Inaugural Great Hall Cotillion by Acacia Carter of Hufflepuff.
- - -
As always, the Harry Potter world and everything in it is property of JKR.

Second Guesses by Acacia Carter

Rated: 6th-7th Years • Past Featured Story
Summary: Neville has got quite enough to be getting on with already, thank you very much, and this... situation with Luna is not making things any easier.

Of Babbling and Balls by Acacia Carter

Rated: 1st-2nd Years •
Summary: When he sees her, Colin's heart starts to race. And now he's got her all to himself for an evening - or at least he did.

This is Acacia Carter of Hufflepuff writing (again) for the Inaugural Great Hall Cotillion of 2012.

A Most Auspicious Mistake by Acacia Carter

Rated: 6th-7th Years • Past Featured Story
Summary: Percy has every procedure, every regulation, perfectly memorized. He knows the precise difference in rank between a Persian Justicar and an American Senator. The annual international conference he organizes goes off each year without a hitch. He has everything under control. This is, perhaps, the reason why Percy is so out of sorts when he wakes up next to a beautiful woman and hasn't the slightest idea what to do next.

This is AcaciaCarter of Hufflepuff, writing for the Great Hall Cotillion of 2012.

The Breaking Point by Acacia Carter

Rated: Professors •
Summary: It was the biggest secret of Auror training, and everyone knew about it.

Nobody talked about it, of course. It was a secret. But everyone knew that one day, it would happen to them, and Neville is no exception to the rule.

This story is second in my Long Way Down continuity.

Eternal thanks to my beta Soraya. :D
