High by Equinox Chick

Rated: 3rd-5th Years • Past Featured Story
Summary: Scorpius Malfoy is the Seeker for Slytherin. Not only that, he's the best Seeker at Hogwarts, and it's his catches that win matches. But this year things are different; Albus Potter has switched to Chaser and the new Gryffindor Seeker is his annoying little sister.

This is the story of how one match and one missed catch can change your life.

This story was accidentally deleted, so is being resubmitted ... very very quickly.

SQUEEEEE! High won the Best Next Generation QSQ award. Thank you so much for the everyone who has helped, either by beta'ing or encouraging me.

Disclaimer: I am not JK Rowling. I'm not sure who I am at the moment, but there must be some Arthur Weasley blood in me.

Thank you Natalie (hestiajones) for doing the vast majority of the beta work on this, and Apurva for work on the early chapters

Squish for Natalie, Jess, Kara and Bob for helping me sort this out.

Due to an archive hissy fit regarding any story with a rating about 3rd-5th, I have temporarily lowered the rating on this story. However, I have NOT changed the content. This story is still a 6th-7th. You click at your own risk.

We have a name!!!!!!!!! Oh em squee! So much win packed into one chapter. I loooooooved the little moment between Albus and Scorpius over lunch, as well. And awwwww Scorpius and Lily's first time xDDD That was so sweet.

“And I love you, Scorpius Hyperion Malfoy because ... ” She paused and then a wicked smile lit up her face “... because you have a fantastic broom.”

I think that's possibly my favourite High line ever.

Author's Response: Perhaps she was talking euphemistically .... ha ha. Yeah, the name. I struggled because after deciding I could not have anything resembling Lucius *sigh*, I fixed on Alexander and then angsted because it's quite normal. Thaddeus is Lavender's dad's name and Blaise ... well, I think you know. I was so tempted to write more about their first time but was too aware that this was 6th-7th so it had to be reasonably smut free. Thanks for the review. Ch 19 is back from my beta - you might know of her - and should be up reasonably soon. Thanks again ~Carole~

Oh my goodness, Ariana, this is beautiful. Beautifully written and structured and just gahhhh. I'm sorry but this review is going to be a jumble of incoherent mush. Your characterisation of Narcissa and Bellatrix was brilliant. You really caught the menace and manipulativeness that Bellatrix exudes. And Narcissa as this naive and pliable young girl, struggling between her loyalty to her family and her loyalty to her heart... just brilliant. I loved the use of second person and the way you split it into separate sections. It worked so well and created this intense atmosphere that had me gripped from start to finish.

This really has exceeded any sort of expectations I had when I made that banner and I'm just so glad you chose it. You are an amazing writer, Ariana, and I can't wait to read more from you.

Julia xD

Author's Response: This is such an amazing review! I'm so, so happy you liked this story, because I thought the banner you made for it was one of the most gorgeous ones I have ever seen. And yay for second person working - I haven't written it before so I was worried, because I know a lot of people that don't like it. Thank you so much for this review, Julia. It means so much :) xx Ariana

Summary: Padma doesn’t expect to fall in love while visiting her extended family in India, nor does she expect to fall in love so quickly. She can’t deny it was a little rash, but her love for Adeem is as strong as if she’d known him her whole life. But with different religions, and conservative families, will they be able to make their love last?

Hi Sarah!

It’s a shame you haven’t continued this fics as I enjoyed the two existing chapters and would very much like to know what comes next.

You have a great beginning. It immediately drew me in, and set up an intriguing atmosphere. You did this at the beginning of chapter two, as well, and it was very effective. It also brought up a lot of questions, which makes me want to know more!

I also enjoyed the world building and the way you worked Indian culture into it. For something I am not completely familiar with, it was enjoyable to read and let the world unfold before me. You were also very visual with your writing – I could really see and feel the world in which Padma and Parvati were moving. Also, it still felt inherently part of the Potterverse, despite the different setting. I love that you gave another name for the Wizarding community.

Padma and Parvati felt very sister-ish :) I’ve spent many hours searching through my sisters wardrobe trying to find a top or a dress or shoes, so I really loved that dynamic ha. I haven’t read many Patil fics but the few I’ve read always offer something different than the last, and you certainly did.

Since it’s unfinished, I can’t really say much about the holes left in the plot. There is one instance of an error: and pushed passed Padma in which ‘passed’ should be ‘past’. That’s all I really have to call you out on, though, because otherwise this is an intriguing fic that I wish I could finish!

I hope one day you are able to finish it :)

Julia.

The Only One by Equinox Chick

Rated: 6th-7th Years •
Summary: Victoire Weasley is in her third year studying to be a Healer. She is beautiful. She is bright. But she's alone. Since splitting up with Teddy Lupin, only one person has come close to disturbing her dreams.

Unfortunately, he happens to be the professor standing in front of her. She knows he has a partner, but she also knows that he's distracted.

This story is a prequel to my Next Gen fic High. It is not necessary to read that to understand this, but reading Lavender, blue - A Gryffindor True might help, although you should get the gist.

Happy Birthday. Ariana (lucca4) You are an incredible writer. (She also left me a shedload of reviews when I deleted the whole of High.)

Awww that was so sad, Carole. But sweet at the same time. I have to admit at first that I was quite nervous going in to this fic because I had this horrible feeling that you had written an affair fic and I can't even explain how much that would have upset me. I'm a selfish reader, obviously. Anyway, I couldn't resist it any longer and I'm soooo glad I finally read it and put my troubled mind at rest. Also, yussss for a female president hehehe xD

I loved the Teddy/Victoire plot you wove together. At first I did not warm to Victoire at all but you managed to redeem her and I ended up loving the ending you gave her. Poor Blaise and Lav, though :( Thank Merlin for High.

Anyway, another brilliant piece, Croll. I hope this isn't the last we see of these kids. Blaise/Lav seems to be a permanent fixture in my shippy heart, now.

Theo Paleye xD

Author's Response: Thank you, Theo.

Mmm, I was a bit worried people would think this was an affair, but I just couldn't do it to my OTP because I'm not sure they'd recover from that. Blaise in that dilemma though ... ha ha ... fun to write. I so know what you mean about not wanting to read things that might upset the equibrium of the pairing you like. I can't read Snily/Siry/Remily etc for that reason. I also can't read anything where LAVENDER DIES! Growl! Ha ha

Thankies ~Croll~

I've been meaning to read this for months but seeing Carole's rec in the SBBC just reminded me. And I'm so very, very glad because this is just beautiful, Lori. I love your Fleur. She is strong and courageous and humble and everything I imagine her to be. The way you interwove her thoughts and memories, her worries and fears, her love for Bill and her anxiety for the Trio, it was just stunning and I regret not reading this sooner. I'm sorry that this review is so fangirly but I can't really form a coherent sentence at the moment let alone leave a review worthy of this fic. You're an amazing writer, Lori, and I can't wait to see what you come up with next.

Author's Response: Julia! I'm so glad you were able to connect with this. I loved Toni's banner, but kept thing, what in the world am I going to say about Fleur??? ;) It was fun imagining what life at Shell Cottage would have been like for her during those times though, especially considering what the first few months of married life *should* have been like.

Thanks for reading and taking the time to review, my friend. I consider it high praise indeed, coming from you. <3

Key of the Door by Equinox Chick

Rated: 3rd-5th Years •
Summary: At the age of twenty, Ron Weasley has a good career, a wonderful girlfriend and a flat of his own. But when he wakes up one morning, shortly before his twenty-first birthday, nothing can quite dispel the gloomy cloud that's been stalking him.

Could a long lunch in the Leaky Cauldron rid him of this malaise?

I need to get round to reviewing all of the amazing poetry that comes out of PA. I'm such a failure as the mod. Ahem.

What always blows me away with this poem is the way in which you really took the prompt and made it your own. I love the way you incorporated the structure and rhythm of the original poem into the final stanza. It's a really powerful ending and you gave it such chant-like flow, which, of course, was the point. Basically, you aced it.

It really is a shame that there is no right align on the archives. Of course, your words are still just as beautiful and chilling but I did love the way you structured the format for the triathlon. It was aesthetically pleasing to the eye and gave each stanza separation which only added to its overall character as a poem.

I adore the flow. There is this wonderfully (almost discordant) rhythm to the poem that perfectly matches the atmosphere and narrative. Gah. It's beautiful, love. Just beautiful.

Your poetry always blows me away, Lafonna. But this one is particularly stunning and one of my all-time favourites.

Greenleaf x

Author's Response: A thousand curses upon the archives for lack of right alignment UGH. >.> But thank you for such a lovely review! :) It cheered me up to read this, and it's always an honour to know you liked my poems, cause YOU THE MAN, MAN! <333

The Untrodden Path by Equinox Chick

Rated: 6th-7th Years • Past Featured Story
Summary: Draco Malfoy -avid Death Eater, proud and eager to be of use to the Dark Lord. Or desperate boy willing to do anything to save his family from dishonour and his father from death? Perhaps both.

What if there'd been another way? What if the road he's taking could diverge and lead him on a different journey? His path is set, he thinks... but then he collides with an insignificant girl and his world changes.

This story is for Julia (the opaleye) whose poetical skill with words leaves me breathless. It is also her 21st birthday. Apologies that I didn't use your fabulous alternate title 'An Act of Selecting or Making A Decision When Faced With Two or More Possibilities?'

Disclaimer: Much as I'd love to be JK Rowling, I'm not :(

Thank you Kara for beta'ing this and minna for mentioning the Robert Frost poem 'The Road Not Taken,' from which I've taken some lines.

Oh My Salazar, Croll. First of all, thank you for writing me a Draco fic! I know he's a git but I love reading Draco fanfic xD And a Draco rarepair no less?!?! FLAILS. Seriously, this is amazing and I'm completely intrigued as to where you're going to take this. Draco's characterisation is great and Hannah is shaping up to be interesting, as well. I looooved the way you quoted Dumbledore at the end. It was quite chilling, especially thinking about it in retrospect after what we now know about Draco and the choices he had to make...

The way Hannah got under Draco's skins was so well done. You made Pansy perfectly irritating (more than irritating, actually. UGH.) and this particular bit really stood out to me.

“You can’t get enough of it, Draco,” she whispered, her eyes alight with malice and lust. His insides curdled, but she was right. He needed this because it was a respite from failure.

Abbott had been crying, he thought.

Gahhh I'm so excited to read more of this! Another chaptered Croll fic to follow!!!!!!

Anyway, thank you so much for writing this. Seriously, this is an amazing birthday present. I'm still flailing.

Julia xoxo

Author's Response: It is all written, so the next chapter should be up soon. It probably works better as a one shot but it was over 10k, - quelle shock! I'm glad you like Draco in this because much as I think he's a snivelling git I also like the possibilities .of his snarkiness - especially to Pansy. Thank you for reviewing and I hope you like the rest of it. ~Croll~

I love this, Maple. I think you've really caught something, the disconnect from the past that Lily feels, which is pertinent today in the real world. Of course, even the daughter of Harry and Ginny Potter struggles, because to understand what went on at the time, you have to have lived it! The way Lily is trying to come to terms with something that she isn't truly able to understand felt very sincere. As I'm half Polish, I've grown up listening to my mum's stories about my grandparents journey from Poland to Siberia to Africa and eventually to England at the end of the war, and I could really relate to what Lily feels, here.

I loved the repetition of 'Today is Victory Day' and the transition at the end when Lily finally realises what Victory Day truly means. Her moment of realisation is even more poignant in that that's what the people who fought died for - for the next generation to grow up in a world of peace where they can look back and learn from the horrors of the past.

What a great little one-shot, Maple. I'm so glad Jess pointed me in this direction :)

Julia xD

Author's Response: That's kind of where I got the main outline for this one-shot, because my Grandfather faught in war, but there is no way I'd ever know what that's like. Thanks for reading :) Maple

I just realised I never reviewed this fic which is a travesty, so here I am.

I first read this at about 3am while listening to the Lost soundtrack and I remember feeling utterly bereft and moved. This fic is so moving, Carole.

It’s not horrific, gritty, or particularly dramatic, but it is touching, and you captured that desperately human need for companionship, and the terrible loneliness that the people on the run must have felt during DH, so well. And there is the quiet sadness running through this fic of nostalgia at Christmases past, which was so beautifully woven between the awkwardly tender moments between Dean and Ted. But it’s not light, either. There is a distinct undercurrent of menace, knowing the direness of their situation, and the fact that out of all of them, only Dean will survive. You just captured every mood so beautifully, so perfectly. You and your missing moments!

I also loved the dynamic that you created between the runaways. Going from the brief scene we read of them in canon, it all felt very true to the book. Dirk’s cynicism, the goblins being… goblins, Ted looking out for Dean, the need to be a father when he can’t be with his own family, Dean’s faith in Harry, and his heartache at missing his family and friends.

Even rereading it, I am feeling weepy again. The football scene is the point where I completely lose it, though. It's just such a beautiful moment.

How do you do it, Carole?

Julia x

Author's Response: Thank you so much, Julia. I've delayed replying to this review because I really wanted to think of a decent response, but I can't. This is such a glorious review, and I'm incredibly appreciative.

Um, how do i do it? I don;t know. What I know about this story is that I had a decent enough head canon for Dean from another story, and Ted from another. Both are Londoners in my mind, and we know Dean liked football. As you know, I like football, and thus I basically decided to base it around that - Ha! (Ted was a Spurs fan - heh heh)

Glad you noticed Dirk. He took a while to get right but I remembered him questioning Dean about Harry being the Chosen One, so went from there. Plus the goblins are his companions, so I figured they had more than a language in common.

I'm getting all nostaligic for Dean now. Perhaps that Cotillion isn;t safe from me yet. :)

Thank you again. ~Carole~

Rated: 6th-7th Years • Past Featured Story
Summary: One failed photograph, two halved souls, and the numerous, marvellous machinations of destiny.

This story is a multi-functional product of four days' continuous typing and lack of sleep. It serves an entry for the Inaugural Great Hall Cotillion and a standby Birthday Present for Julia/the opaleye. More importantly, it marks my return to fanfiction after two months' hiatus, because that is kind of inhumanly long.

Thanks to Kara for reading the Prologue and motivating me, and Carole for Chipping-on-the-Wye.

Never thought of him away from the scrawny little brother of Colin but now... *fans face*

I love the way you've built these characters from the bare bones of canon. They seem just so very real. And Colin living on in Dennis's work... cue my sobbing.

Author's Response: Hahaha! Actually, I researched major news of March 2008 in the UK and kept getting Jade Goody :X I'm sure he reads a lot of other stuff too ha ha ha. Dennis is sexy in his own misunderstood hipster rebel way LOL. I guess he would count as a hipster in the wizarding world lulz.

Oh I just adore Dennis. This was quite bittersweet to read. You show his grief really well throughout the chapter (and throughout the rest of the fic, as well) through his reluctance to rejoin the wizarding world... and when his dad gave him a watch for his 17th birthday, my eyes welled up, I'm not going to deny it, which was rather troublesome being at work and all.

It was really interesting seeing the way Dennis transitioned into the man we've been reading about for the last three chapters. I think this was the right moment as well. It just flowed so seamlessly from the last chapter. One thing: you said "tutorials" but I think you meant "editorials"?

This is just so beautiful, Lafonna. I'm not sure if you realise how compelling this fic truly is.

I can't wait to read more.

Author's Response: Thank you for catching the error! I have edited the draft :D It's so wonderful to know you're loving this, because I kept writing it with you in mind heehee. Also - phew- I was taking a risk by shifting gears with tis chapter, but there was no other way to work Dennis' history, which is so crucial to the story for many reasons. It was originally a part of chapter 2, but something like this huge had to be separated from the POV switch I used there. So, I'm super relieved to hear it worked! :)

And Dennis and Eloise are so effing adorable together I can't. New favourite rare-pair. The last scene was just so touching. Awwwww. So many feelings.

Oh goodness, Carole, this is brilliant. Molly is so wonderfully written, I felt myself being drawn to her right from the start, as if I've known her for a long time rather than her being merely a character on a computer screen... seriously, I think she's a triumph. You have such a knack for capturing the heart of a character. Even the smaller roles, like Percy and Kingsley, are so well drawn, subtle yet firmly grounded in what we know from canon. Percy posing for the photo, his small frown at the inconvenience of waiting, just stood out to me so much. And the amiability and humility of Kingsley was just so right.

Hebe and Barnabas are suitably horrid although Barnabas definitely transitioned into horrific. That I despised those two before the worst of them was revealed is a true mark of brilliant writing. And then we have Aaron. Another dishy photographer. What am I supposed to do with myself, eh?

As Alex said, I appreciated the way he didn't weaken Molly's own strength after the incident. He empowered her, reassured her of her own self-worth. It was great.

This chapter was truly brilliant and may just give me the courage to read the final chapter of High which I am trying to save. I just don't want it to end. But, you know what, as long as you're still writing fics like this, it shouldn't matter that High has ended because there will always be more amazing Croll!fic to discover and devour.

Author's Response: I wanted it to be important that Molly wasn;t weak and that someone else recognises that. She might not sparkle like her sister, and may have been dragooned into the engagement, but I felt it was important that Aaron recognised and made her recognise that she was strong.

Snigger - dishy photographers seem to be taking over. I don;t know about Natalie, but my inspiration was the fact that he could legitimately watch her and see the changes as she talked to people - (and the pearls which are in the next chapter)

Glad you like Kingsley. I find it hard not to put other characters in - probably because I'm in love with them all *sigh*. My favourite exchange in in the next chapter between Mc G and Sprout - for some reason it makes me giggle when I picture them.

Thank you so much for the review. Means a lot. Oh and :( to High as well, but there'll be spin offs and I'm plotting a sequel with Kara's assistance. ~Carole~

Okay, I should not have read this at work. I'm rather flustered right now. OH MY EFFING GODRIC. I'm honestly not entirely sure how to respond to this. This is going to be a barely coherent review but WOW. That was hot. So hot.

I was cheering on Molly as she stood up to that awful mother of hers and then after... heheheh. Sorry for this crap review but you've left me speechless (and very much in lust with this wonderful Aaron).

Author's Response: I should have put a NSFW warning on it - heh heh heh.

Glad you liked this chapter, Julz, even if you did get 'flustered'. It possibly went a bit to fast from kissing to ... yeah ... but Molly has been waiting for twenty-seven years and Aarons don't come along every day (pun intended). Hmmm, wonder what will happen when the weekend is over. heh heh ~Carole~
