The Lions of Gryffindor by Equinox Chick

Rated: 3rd-5th Years • Past Featured Story
Summary: It is June 1976 and The Marauders are at the top of their game. From the outside they look to have everything. But appearances, as the saying goes, can be deceptive.

James is discovering that not everything in life is his for the taking. Sirius knows he will have to defy his formidable family. Remus lives in constant fear of his life beyond Hogwarts. As for Peter... Well, Peter is struggling to live up to his friends.

The ties of friendship are strong, but war is raging and with a dark power rising those ties will inevitably fray.

Added to the mix is an adversary called Severus Snape, some lost House Points, a prank or two and a whole lot of Lily.

This is a Marauder tale.

This is a story of what made them special.

This is a story of why it started to go wrong for The Lions of Gryffindor.

OH MY GOOD GODRIC! Lions of Gryffindor won the 2009 QSQ for Best Marauders' Era Story. Amazed and incredibly grateful to those who nominated, judged and have beta'd this fic. THANK YOU.

I really love this fic (I'm completely obsessed with Harry Potter; the extent of my obsession almost threatens to interfere with everyday life - and for me to sometimes forget that this isn't J.K. Rowling makes this story especially wonderful!) You've really captured the characters from Dumbledore to Sirius's mother, and I really appreciate how you haven't reverted to the one dimensional boring Lilly and the predicatble James. I think that where this fic really succeeds is the fact that while stricly adhering to canon, you've established you own distinct plots ( Bowtruckle challenge was brilliant!) so it really is a strong story in its own right. You are a very talented writer and I can see from how long this fic has been ongoing that every chapter is crafted with considerable care and deliberation. Sorry for the rambling review, but I'm really loving this- especially looking forward to when Lilly finally falls for James though! Update soon please! X

Author's Response: Thank you very much for the lovely review. This fic is very close to my heart for various reasons, but particularly because I love the Marauders - hee hee. I realise I need to update a bit more often though, so maybe I'll have a month dedicated solely to Lions ... that might work. Thanks again ~Carole~

Little Lions by SexY_LydZ

Rated: 6th-7th Years •
Summary:

On a stormy October evening, a letter, a late night trip to the library and a secret conversation lead Lily Evans to discover that there are several mysteries in her life that only she has the capability and the inclination to solve. The first mystery is James Potter – what could turn him from the arrogant, could-care-less boy that she had previously known to someone withdrawn and far away? Then, perhaps more troubling, there is Esther Collins, the fifth year who has vanished without a trace. Furthermore, one of Lily’s best friends, Izza, is seeing a mystery boy and Lily is determined to know who.

Then there is the threat of war, backstabbing friends and NEWT’s. A disinherited and emotionally battered Sirius Black is the source of heartache for his friends, except perhaps Izza, who, with her own terrifying family, might just understand him. Lily’s closest male friend, Remus Lupin, is hiding a dangerous secret from her. Peter’s girlfriend is screwing him over, and the whole time Lily is struggling to stop the people she loves from coming apart at the seams.

I really love this fic! I’ve been checking Mugglenet almost daily for the last month in anticipation of a new chapter, so I decided to write a review when I was checking today! I adore the Marauder era and I feel you've really captured the essence of it- the turbulent times permeated with fear, but still the typical adolescent dilemmas! To echo some of the other reviews I love how you have steered away from the typical one dimensional characters, and away from the overdone Lilly/James hate relationship. I was so delighted that Lilly and James finally got together in this chapter! Although, I always imagined her falling for him earlier, around the end of sixth year maybe.
I especially love the Izza/Sirius Relationship. I always felt that Sirius, with his zealous nature, must have loved someone ferociously and passionately, but it was ill-fated. So their relationship really fits in with what I imagined. I also love how you've shown the depth of the Marauders' friendships. I too feel that Peter deserved more credit as friend in the early days, and I think you've depicted their fellowship really well. Sorry for rambling, but I really am Enjoying this story- you're a great writer. UPDATE SOON! X

Author's Response: Oh my god, this review absolutely made my day! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a sweet review :) Okay, good news, the next chapter is awaiting validation, yay! Now, onto the review. I am so glad you feel I capture that turbulence, I really want that in my story, but I sometimes feel I forget about it a little, because it's so plot heavy. As for Lily and James... well, they're not quite together yet :D I do remember somewhere in the books someone saying to Harry that Lily started to fall for James sometime in seventh year, after he 'got over himself'. But I'm so happy you like the dynamics of their relationship. And I feel the same about Sirius. I think that he had the sort of passionate, intensely loyal, wild nature that lends itself well to an ill-fated relationship. Of course, I can't speculate on what might happen between him and Izza - that would ruin the story! Suffice to say, there is plenty more Izza and Sirius to come in this story. I absolutely agree about Peter. There is a reason the four were friends, he had something to offer them. He had other aspects to his personality than the weakness and betrayal that came later. Thank you again for this wonderful review, and all the great feedback and compliments. I hope you enjoy the coming chapters and keep reviewing so I can continue to hear your thoughts!

Summary:

He returned with a quiet sadness and a surprising new responsibility to keep him focused. She returned with a misplaced bitterness and the matching position that forced them to work with one another. Wow, this is an excellent piece. The characterisation is just perfect! L & J are my favourite pairing and you have really done them justice. Often, whilst reading fics I have a running commentary in my head of what I'd modify so that the story moulds into how I imagine Lilly and James ( often tenuous) relationship, but this needed no altering, I think you've really captured their essence.

It was great how you managed to tease us by weaving in the backdrop of the Hogsmeade incident, I hope we find out more about it! I also appreciate how you don't have James embarking upon seventh year with only the conquest of Lily in mind, but how his new found maturity and weariness is due to external happenings rather than just a conscious change in an attempt to win her over- it really adds a depth to his character, and a layering to their relationship.

Very sorry for the rambling, but I really enjoyed this and please, please update soon.

Author's Response: Thank you so much for the lovely review! I do the same thing with altering stories *cough* so I'm thrilled you didn't need to do that here, lol! And I'm glad you liked their characterization, because I'm always worried about that, given people's perceptions of them from the vast amount of fan-fic out there. I suppose there will be a bit more about what happened in Hogsmeade, but it's more background that shapes the present. I've just updated so I hope you enjoy the next chapter! Thanks again for reading and reviewing, I really appreciate it! ~Gina :)

Hi! I'm sorry, I know I've already left a review, but I'm truly enjoying this fic; I'm supposed to by writing my dissertation at the moment so it is a much welcomed distraction, and I am checking Mugglenet far too regularly because of it ! I love your writing style and the characterisation is just perfect; I'm enjoying how L & J have perfected exactly how to rise the other, and the irascible and cantankerous James reminds me of Harry from OTP! However I just have one question that I had to ask: I'm almost too loyal to canon, and I was wondering in your version of events, did James pursue and ask out Lily in fifth year? While the sexual tension is blatant underneath their biting antagonism, it just seems that she really aggravates him to no end, and if he had 'fancied' her in the past he would know why he hated seeing her and Whitby. Apologies if this is an area you were planning on alluding to in laters chapters, or don't think it warrants an answer, but I had to ask! Keep up the regular updates, you're a very talented writer!

Author's Response: Hi there! Thanks so much for the review, and I love answering questions. I'm a pretty strict canon girl myself, so as to the bit about fifth year, here's what I've been thinking. It was fifth year and it was a school boy's crush. It just doesn't really figure into their relationship at this point, in this story. What will be more important is that they settled down a bit sixth year and almost kissed near the end. But so much happened to them over the summer that they've returned so burdened by it all they can't see through it to wear they almost were. They are just so annoyed by each other right now neither realizes why exactly. I hope that makes sense. And I hope that starts to come through more as the story progresses. I really appreciate the lovely review and am glad you are enjoying it so far. Thanks so much! ~Gina :)

Wow that chapter was amazing! to echo the reviews of others, I love the dynamics between Lily and James; thier joint ignorance of their attraction to each other is frustrating but makes for addicitive reading- and I just want to shake the two of them out of their oblivious state!

I'm also enjoying how you're devoting time to devloping the OCs in this fic, the over eager and forceful Anastasia is great! Basically, I know this is cheesy, but it is definitely the highltigh of my day when I log on and you've treated us to another chapter! My only undue criticism is that the chapters are too short!

Brilliant!

Author's Response: Thank you so much for the lovely review! I'm so glad you enjoyed this chapter and that the OCs aren't driving you mad, lol. I appreciate the review and hope you enjoy the rest! ~Gina :)
