My Penname is BrokenPromise because that is how I found this Harry Potter.
When I was younger, I saw a trailer for a Harry Potter movie, and it scared me. That day I decided that I would never have anything to do with Harry Potter.
Just before DH1 came out in cinemas, a friend told me that Dumbledore died. I knew a little bit of Potter background and I quite liked Professor Dumbledore, so I asked her who had done it. She showed me the first book and said, "Read it." I read them all within two weeks, and then watched DH1 in the cinema.
Having read all the books and seen all the movies, I started writing a Fanfiction, and then looked for inspiration online. What I found was this archive and all the wonders within. Like many others, I have enjoyed the work on this site. I started writing because I thought I ought to give something back.

I would like to thank you if you are reading this and hope that you have enjoyed/will enjoy my work. I also post poetry on the beta boards (mostly for the wonderful challenges that are set over there), which I may eventually get round to posting here.

Rated: 3rd-5th Years •
Summary: Hermione Granger is pursued by a relentless Draco Malfoy. And what a Malfoy wants, a Malfoy gets!
Reviewer: BrokenPromise Signed
Date: 03/05/12 Title: Chapter 1: Chapter 1

LOL. Loved how all through that Draco was still as cocky, self centered and I-will-get-what-I-want as always! And you managed not to turn him into a sadist (like a lot of fics do)!

The Flying Lesson by Hypatia

Rated: 1st-2nd Years •
Summary: The Dark Lord pays Professor Snape a late night visit, with the intention of teaching Snape to fly.

AT this rate, I'm going to be laughing in my sleep too! loving the whole thing from head to toe, especially cookies and the hole in the window!

Author's Response: Thank you very much! :)

A Black Tonks by Mistletoe

Rated: 3rd-5th Years •
Summary: It's the biggest battle I've ever faced in my life: my blood or my love? The two can be ambiguous, but in my case, they are black and white, day and night. I had been seemingly repressed by my family for too long, so I did the one thing that allowed me a choice. I ran away.

The Fourteenth of February by Pondering

Rated: 3rd-5th Years •
Summary: Lily Evans thinks Valentine's Day is bad enough without propositions from mysterious strangers, fuchsia coloured hair ribbons and the irritating smirk on James Potter's face.

But it just gets even worse when she finds out who's been sending her the presents...

This is the Final Exam written for Humour & Writing: Earning Respect by Pondering of Ravenclaw.

Hahaha! loved the ending.
Lucius sending a valentine was a bit odd, but you captured him perfectly. It was less odd than what I originally thought though: I thought it was Tom Riddle. Now that would be very very paedophilic.
Snape's valentine was perfect as well. I could tell straight away. And I loved that the Marauders all sent letters. That could've been very awkward...

Seven Thousand Sunsets by FullofLife

Rated: 3rd-5th Years • Past Featured Story
Summary: When a fatal disease spreads like wildfire around the Wizarding World, it is up to Rose Weasley to find a cure - with the help of no other than Severus Snape. But working with a man she's fallen in love with is much harder than it sounds.

First Place in the Gauntlet's Sixth Run!
Reviewer: BrokenPromise Signed
Date: 03/05/12 Title: Chapter 1: Beginnings

Well, I read up to chapter 4 and was going to ask about the Time Turners and the plausibility of it being used to the extent, but now that I've read the whole story, it doesn't matter anymore. So many really good little ideas combined with a brilliant plot and some very good characterisation. (Incidentally, I am trying write a fic about Lily (I) and Snape Pre-Hogwarts and I am having so much trouble with them!) And I loved the twists! It was sad but it fitted together perfectly. And Rose possibly finding someone new when she finds his grave is just genius and it gave me hope for her. It's just a shame that so many others had to die too, but that's what epidemics do I suppose.

Lavender, blue - A Gryffindor true by Equinox Chick

Rated: Professors • Past Featured Story
Summary: When Lavender Brown returns to Hogwarts for her seventh year, she knows things will be hard. Professor Dumbledore’s death has scared everybody, and with her Muggle-born mother in hiding, she makes a promise to her father to stay safe.

But to stay safe she must ignore her instincts and turn her back on her friends.

This is a Lavender Brown/Blaise Zabini story, but also concerns that last year at Hogwarts when the Trio were a'hunting Horcruxes.

Thank you to Laura (bookofsecrets) and Terri (mudbloodproud) for beta'ing the first chapter, Alyssa (Harry4lif) for the second and Emma (Amortentia x) for taking over the reins. And Natalie for the last chapter.

Disclaimer: I am not JK Rowling. I doubt that surprises anyone.

This story won the 2010 QSQ for Best Chaptered Non-Canon Romance. Thank you to everyone who nominated, appreciated and judged.

ATTENTION: Because of prissy glitch on the archive, stories with a rating about 3rd-5th cannot be read. I have lowered the rating to enable access, but the content remains the same. This is a PROFESSORS rated fic. Read at your own discretion - the sexual situations warning is there for a reason.

Firstly, Happy (belated) Equinox!

Wow, that was lovely. I love how Blaise is both typical Slytherin and not, and how Lavender feels that she can't tell people about it. You can really tell how much you adore this couple, even though its one people would very very rarely think of. I have new pictures of those two in my head now.

I adore the Korybantes idea, it makes Blaise seem much more 'humane' as he doesn't have a house elf. I also love the mansion in Italy, and the chocolate and strawberries made me hungry!

Secondly, I know that you are probably extremely busy writing in your free time, but I was wondering if you would be interested in being my beta? I'm really sorry to but this in a review, but i couldn't contact you from your author page and I couldn't really think of any other way.

Finally, I don't know if you noticed but I have another story up (SQUEE!) and would be again honoured if you would read (and review?) it. Again, sorry to put this in your review but I think that it is very much your fault that I got the idea of trying to fill in a massive hole in the Potterverse.

Love this story and this ship! And all your stories to be honest.

BrokenPromise

Author's Response: Hi there, thank you very much for the review and I'm pleased you liked my lavender/Blaise story because it's one of my favourites and I still ♥ the pairing. I have noticed your new story and will be reading it very soon :). Regarding being a beta. I am actually a shockingly bad beta. My punctuation and grammar leave a lot to be desired so I really don;t think I'd be able to do a good job for you. I would suggest you head over to the beta boards and get involved with the forums there.. There are some very good betas there and they'd be willing to help, I'm sure.

Thanks again for the review, it's much appreciated. ~Carole~

It Takes a Wolf to Prank a Dog by Equinox Chick

Rated: 1st-2nd Years •
Summary: Now in his seventh year, Remus Lupin is a calm and responsible student. His friends know this and often take advantage, knowing that he never takes it to heart.

But sometimes, just sometimes, Moony longs for revenge, especially when Padfoot takes things one step too far.

But Padfoot is wise to Marauder pranks, so for April Fool's Day this year, Moony enlists the help of four girls who are also champing at the bit to humiliate the 'too damn adorable' Sirius Black.

I am Equinox Chick of Hufflepuff and this is my entry in the April Fool's Day Challenge set in the Great Hall.

Thank you to Alyssa (Harry4lif) and Wendy (Kiley) for their help in beta'ing this tale.

The song featured in this story is Hot Legs by Rod Stewart which was a huge hit in the early part of 1978 and seemed to lend itself very well to Sirius Black!

Disclaimer Sirius and Remus are not mine *sigh* but belong to JK Rowling as do James,Lily and Peter. The Harley-Queens however are my rather fluffy invention.
Reviewer: BrokenPromise Signed
Date: 02/25/12 Title: Chapter 1: Chapter 1

It was brilliant to see a fun, more Marauder-ish side of Remus, and even better seeing Sirius get a taste of his own medicine!

Author's Response: Thank you. This was a bit of a jokey fic for a challenge but it was fun to write. ~Carole~

A Second Chance by Equinox Chick

Rated: 1st-2nd Years •
Summary: "I don't need help from filthy little Mudbloods like her!" **

Fifteen months have passed since Severus Snape shouted those words in fury. He's had fifteen months without Lily and it hurts like hell. Over the summer holiday he's made a decision - he wants her back. But first he needs to speak to her before the Hogwarts Express leaves King's Cross.

This story was originally written for the Hufflepuff Back to School challenge last year.

** indicates a line taken directly from Snape's Worst Memory - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I am not JK Rowling but I doubt you're surprised by that revelation.
Reviewer: BrokenPromise Signed
Date: 04/14/12 Title: Chapter 1: Chapter 1

:( *sniff sniff*
Poor Severus. And to think that he would've done anything for her. Talking to his mum like that wasn't very nice, although he did have a pretty decent reason. I thought that it was interesting that he stopped when he recognised his father in himself, as it shows a sense of distaste or maybe even hatred for his father.
Although in the last bit, Lily appears to be different from the modest and mature girl that Severus remembered from the riverbank. She seems more carefree and reckless and more 'Gryffindor' (if that can be used as an adjective).
Sirius is being cheeky as usual, but I found it amusing when Regulus cheeked him back, because it gave Regulus a stronger side. To me, he is usually just an easily led child who finds himself struggling to get out of deep water, but the Regulus who can maintain the act that he has no brother when he knows that is what will infuriate Sirius most is a Regulus far more capable of tracking down and attempting to destroy a Horcrux.
So lastly I will say that I am going to have to R&R another one (or maybe two) of your stories to cheer me up now...

Author's Response: Thank you for reviewing. Wow, this was one of my very first fics on the site. I'd almost forgotten it, although I remember very clearly the image at the end of James and Lily nearly missing the train.

I think the girl Snape remembers was not the real Lily. He does seem to idealise her and saw what he wanted to see, rather than who she was. At fourteen she might not have been interested in boys, although I think it was more that she wasn't interested in him - ha.

Yeah, he was rude to his mother, but then I think they were a pretty miserable family. *sigh*

Thanks again ~Carole~

Operation: Lily by siriusly_confused

Rated: 1st-2nd Years •
Summary: For Lily Evans, James Potter was just a crush. A guilty pleasure, in other words. She never meant to fall in love with him. Especially after six long years of having to reject him. James would always be chasing after her, so why not live a little before giving in? It's finally come to their Seventh Year at Hogwarts after all. But little did Lily know, James took his tactics to a whole new level- Operation: Lily.

Contemplating Lilies by Equinox Chick

Rated: 3rd-5th Years •
Summary: Apparating to Hogsmeade from his Uncle Alphard's funeral, Sirius Black is expecting to see his friends already ensconced in the Three Broomsticks. They'd promised that they'd help him send off his favourite uncle in style. But after a ridiculous prank, the Marauders are stuck in detention, leaving Sirius alone and contemplating lilies.

Will anyone else raise a glass to Alphard?

Disclaimer: I am not JK Rowling and I doubt that surprises you.

Thank you to Kara (Karaley Dargen) for beta'ing this story.
Reviewer: BrokenPromise Signed
Date: 02/25/12 Title: Chapter 1: Contemplating Lilies

Slightly confused here, but that’s probably just me (and my crazy mind again). Did Sirius become an alcoholic? Or was it just a little crush on Lily? (Crazy mind: actually, Sirius as an alcoholic would be interesting..manic and difficult, but interesting...)
Keeping it concise: the usual great ideas, brilliant characterisation, good knowledge (of the Potterverse and, so it would seem, botany) or research, and your own straightforward style.
Only noticed the Rosmerta – roses pun: oops…that was my third read…

Author's Response: Oh, no I didn't mean he was like Alphard with the alcohol (not at this stage, anyway) I meant that he liked girls with red hair, but he'll never act on it because of his friendship with James. Mind you, I do think Sirius had a problem with alcohol and depression in OOTP when he's left at Grimmauld Place, but that's another story :)

Ah, the botany. Gooogle is always a great help - hee hee.

Thank you for all your reviews. They mean a lot. ~Carole~

A Tangled Web by Equinox Chick

Rated: 1st-2nd Years •
Summary: In September 1991, Karis McLaggan receives a commission to paint the portrait of the powerful Tiberius Crouch. As the painting develops, so does their relationship.

But does Tiberius really understand Karis' intent?

This is Equinox Chick of Hufflepuff and this is my entry for the Lofty Learning Challenge: The Science of Portraiture.

NB - The purpose of this challenge was to write a monologue so the conversation is all from Karis' point of view.

Many thanks to Colores/Fresca for beta'ing this and making very helpful suggestions.
Reviewer: BrokenPromise Signed
Date: 04/14/12 Title: Chapter 1: A Tangled Web

Oooooooo.....nice.....
That was very unexpected. The title makes much more sense now, and it fits perfectly: the mother's love, the cold-blooded murder, the honeymoon and mood afterwards, the Greek connections, the portrait, the flirting, the whole story is engulfing as a spider's web to a fly.
Karis is an exquisite character. So this is the 'Mrs Zabini' who I've seen in some other story and who I seem to have missed in the books...although I read them rather quickly so I suppose that must be why.
Although I found some of this difficult to follow, the end was good and the myth was new to me. I also wonder about the other husbands...and especially whether Nikolas became Karis' next victim...

Author's Response: Blaise's mother is mentioned very briefly in HBP when Blaise is talking to Slughorn. There's a reference to her having married seven times to older men who all died quickly .... I write about her in Lavender, blue (my Blaise/Lavender story), and she's also in a mystery I wrote. If you want to read some more about her, then I suggest trying hestiajones - Desire and a Half, or Rendezvous with Mrs Zabini, or ToBeOrNotToBeAGryffindor's Diary of a Black Widow Woman.

I used that myth again - in a way - in a comedy - called The Bacchus Book, if you're interested. Thanks very much for the review - Carole~

Peace in Heaven by Equinox Chick

Rated: 3rd-5th Years •
Summary: After decades of hatred, a friendship begins...

Severus Snape wakes up after Nagini's bite in a hospital bed. He is dead, of that there is no doubt, but he cannot move on as the others who fell in battle have.

Why?

I am Equinox Chick from Hufflepuff and this is my entry in the November in-house banner/story challenge.

Author's Note: For this competiition, the writers in Hufflepuff picked banners designed by other Puffs and wrote a story based on the picture, title and catchphrase. The banner I chose was by Terri (mudbloodproud).

Disclaimer: I am not JK Rowling. I think it's safe to assume that you all know that.

I am indebted to the truly wonderful (and QSQ award winning) Emma (Amortentia x) who has beta'd this fic. Not only did she sort out my punctuation, but she had some extremely good suggestions throughout the story.

There was just something about that piece that made me chuckle at the end. There were some phrases in the middle that I loved too, but by the time I'd finished it I'd forgotten them!
Brilliant as always!

Author's Response: Thank you. This was an odd one to write, based on a banner someone made. Wasn't quite sure it worked, to tell you the truth, but it was fun in the end to write. ~Carole~

Aberforth Dumbledore: A Love that Dare not Bleat its Name by Equinox Chick

Rated: 3rd-5th Years •
Summary: Aberforth Dumbledore was once infamous throughout the land for casting Inappropriate Charms on goats. He never responded to the claims, never gave his side of the story and lived with an odd reputation for decades.

But now he wants to set the record straight before Rita Skeeter has a chance to twist things furthur awry.

This is Equinox Chick from Hufflepuff and this is my entry in the Stirring category for the Winter Snows 09 competition on the MNFF Beta Boards.

I am not JK Rowling. Does that honestly surprise anyone!

Date: 03/02/12 Title: Chapter 1: Aberforth Dumbledore and the Enchanted Goat

Totally reiterating what all the other reviews have said: everything was so funny! Skeeter and Fudge being typical, the names, the truth...just everything. I'm glad you gave Aberforth and Order of Merlin too. My only problem is, as he's told the truth, what happens to him? Does he get his long overdue years in Azkaben or his Order taken away? Or does he live out the rest of his life peacefully in the Hogs Head?
But anyway, just another brilliant piece of work!

Author's Response: Thank you very much. I think that as several decades have passed since the offence and Aberforth is a hero that he'll get off and live his life in the Hogs Head with his goats. Poor Aberforth.

Thanks again ~Carole~

I read this ages ago: can't believe I haven't reviewed it! Perhaps I read it before I registered.

On to the real review: that was really funny! I actually loved it and could really see all of those personalities there, perhaps surprisingly.

Having also read the other reviews, I think a Snapehart would be very interesting...

Author's Response: Thanks so much for the review! I'm glad you found it funny, but even better, I'm glad you could see Harry in each of those personas. That was sort of the point, and I had fun trying to make it. But beware what you wish for: Snapehart is not for the faint of heart.;) Although, you might try 'Lockhart, Sprout, and Two Smoking Barrels' if you'd like a hint of what could be. Hee hee. Absolutely beautiful. It made me cry!
Wonderful characters. I love it when people take characters and give them a back story. And I thought that the mother narrating was a brilliant idea: It made everything so much more...poignant, I suppose.
