HAHAHAHA this needs a sequel. With Ron receiving the gift. And prequels. With Harry coming up with the plan and Hermione asking everyone. LOL
Author's Response: I'm so glad people are still reading and enjoying this. I had a lot of fun writing this all those years ago! Thanks for the review :)
This fic was written by the Slytherin team for the Jan/Feb QWC round over on the Beta Forums.
Hahaha. And Krum at the end! :D
I read this a couple of years ago, but I only joined this site recently and I HAD to leave a comment because this and another story of yours - Fool Me Twice, are the ones that convinced me that AU fanfics can also be great. I always stayed away from AU because the few times I'd tried, I always ended up being disappointed. But these two stories were SO SO GOOD! I love how you've written James and Lily, and I love how you've written the politics and how it affects them. I love their discussions on Muggle-borns and Purebloods, and I love how they slowly fall for each other. (Also there's something adorable about purebloods who make an effort to learn more about muggles... :) ).
This was such a beautifully written story! I've always felt it must be sad to be a squib -- of course, no one feels much for Filch because he's always being nasty, but Arabella Figg has always made me feel curious. What does she do when she's not doing Order stuff, or when Harry was at Hogwarts, how does she manage? I wasn't expecting Mundungus Fletcher here, but it was all so in-character. Him just dropping by without warning, her feeling exasperated (somewhat like Molly) but still glad for the company. And it was very sweet of him to give her an honestly bought gift.
That last line was heartbreaking, though. Was it from Dumbledore? I remember he wrote a similar letter to Petunia...
Nice story, overall! :)
I LOVE what you've written so far! Especially the way you've written Ginny. She's brave, clever, reckless (so Gryffindor-y), but she's also a hot-headed teen, and worried about her family, Harry, Hermione. Ginny's one of my favourite characters and it annoys me when people dismiss her as annoying/selfish/does-not-deserve-her. You've really done a great job of portraying her. Also, her relationships with everyone. From discussing boys with her Mom and Hermione, to trying to gang up with the twins, the way "Loony Lovegood" becomes her closest friend at Hogwarts, and then her growing friendships at school.
I actually keep forgetting that Colin was Ginny's age. Even when I first read the book, I remember I still thought of him as that 11 year old excited kid and that made me even sadder when he died... And of course, you made Colin plan all that with Ginny and the rest... Heart-breaking. I don't remember whether Dennis survived. I'm pretty sure he did. Maybe they could still go out and have that Muggle Day in honour of Colin. :(
(Also, that "think of what Dumbledore would want" and Hagrid saying "yes, he loved parties" was a nice touch. Reminded me of the trio's trips Hagrid's hut.)
Looking forward to the next update! :)
Author's Response: Thank you so much, this is such a lovely review! It really means so much to me! I also still think of Colin as very small, I'm finding him tough to write. So glad you like it!
Noooo :'(
Came back to read your fic after ages and it's still amazing. :D
Tonks and Remus were among my FAV characters (And the Pottermore details on Remus were even more heart-breaking). Aaah I wish Ginny hadn't been to see this happen. :'(
I can't even imagine how she'll feel when she finds out about Collin, especially since she helped him hide in this fic. :'(
Pretty sure I've said this before, but you write Ginny perfectly -- brave, stubborn, everything.
But aagh, there're so many more deaths coming. :'(
I'm crying. Fred, George. :'(
So Polly was the one.... And yet you can't even feel angry with her... Did McLaggen at least protect Polly's mother? I mean, I know he was an annoying jerk, but I wouldn't think he'd be THAT horrible. :( I'd feel better if he was at least genuinely trying to help Polly. :(
You've really done a great job with all your original characters. :)
And oh, the way they feel for Harry! :(
I can totally imagine Ron and Hermione suddenly realizing Harry wasn't there with them and looking for him frantically because they KNOW him, they KNOW he'd rather sacrifice himself, and Ron, especially, already burning with rage because of Fred's death, he'd be even more upset/angry/worried/scared that they can't find Harry. I love how the rest of the family has to physically restrain him so he doesn't go after Harry; even though the Weasleys themselves feel horrible (because obviously, by now, Harry is a Weasley, just not by name).
And then McGonagall and Ginny and everyone shouting for him. That was such a touching moment in the books (to see how much Harry means to them, and not just as a symbol), and it's even sadder here, even though I know Harry's coming back. :(
Author's Response: Thank you for all your lovely reviews :) McLaggen's actually going to pop up soon in my other fic, so I can't give too much away! But Polly's mum was all right :)
I'm so glad you liked these chapters, it sounds horrible but I actually really enjoyed writing them. I really miss this fic.
"...as Ron and Hermione left the hall, a Harry-sized gap between them."
^This was such a cute image.
Beautiful.
Parts of it were so horribly sad, like Harry meeting Teddy and feeling guilty, and George's state... but there were those light moments too - Madam Pomfrey saying seeing Ron and Harry in the Hospital Wing was "like old times," for example. :D
Ron-Harry fight was really cute. :D And him mothering Harry even more than Molly!
Again, beautiful.
And George...
Another beautiful story. A very peaceful setting. Almost enough to forget that James and Lily don't get a happy ending. But then - ‘It’s Halloween today.’ So this would be their last day? (Because Harry seems to be a year old). That made it so sad. :(
Author's Response: That's right - I wanted to give them one last beautiful night!
I was looking up your other fics after reading the Deathly Hallows one and came across this. Although I love all canon pairs, this is the first Rolf-Luna fic I've seen and it was so CUTE! I can totally imagine them going off on mad adventures and not caring about being called weird. (And I know Eddie Redmayne is playing Newt, not Rolf, in the new movie, but I was still imagining him while reading the story :P).
I hope you continue this, though. I really want Luna to find those Crumple-Horned Snorkacks!
Author's Response: Thank you so much! I am actualy thinking of writing a Luna/Rolf adventure series after my DH one, so watch this space!
