Entirely His Fault by RebeccaChoong

Rated: 1st-2nd Years •
Summary: Hermione muses as she serves a detention she earned entirely because of Ron Weasley.
Reviewer: the_evenstar Signed
Date: 04/28/07 Title: Chapter 1: Entirely His Fault

What a sweet story! I loved Hermione's focus on the fact that her detention was "entirely his fault," because it seems to sum up their relationship - they have so many petty arguments despite the fact that they love each other. I also liked how Ron suddenly seemed attractive to Hermione after they started dating. It's funny how our perception of "beauty" is so incredibly influenced by our emotional feelings. Great, great story!! :D

The Futility of Reason by Vocalion

Rated: 1st-2nd Years •
Summary: A procrastinating Potions master puts his worst foot forward as he makes an unwavering, albeit unconventional attempt to prevent Hermione's marriage. Will forty-eight hours afford Severus Snape sufficient time to convince her that he is a supercilious and unmitigated nuisance? Written in response to the Spring Faire Festival's "I Want to Kiss the Bride" story option.

Wow! As an avid Oscar Wilde fan, I LOVED how well you portrayed witty!Snape! I, wow, I've always been tempted to think of him that way, but I don't think I could ever write him that witty and that absolutely believable at the same time. Just... what a sweet story! I really, really loved it!!

Author's Response: Thank you! I\'m glad you enjoyed it.

Downspiral by Noldo

Rated: 3rd-5th Years •
Summary: The runup to the fateful Hallowe'en of 1981. Sirius suspects Remus, Remus worries, James is about to die, and Peter is simply afraid.

As of the 15th of March, the remaining part of this fic is being revised marginally. Updates will happen as soon as it is in a reasonable state of coherency.

I have to say, I'm really in awe of your writing style. You could make anything sound eloquent, I'm quite convinced.

That being said, this story was by no means mere eloquence! I nearly cried when Sirius was at Godric's Hollow, looking for James' glasses. I've never read a fanfic that made death seem so real and powerful. It's easy to become accustomed to the fact that Lily and James died tragic deaths, but when you illustrate how profoundly it affected Sirius, it just became so real to me, and painfully so. But I enjoyed it immensely, and I think I can fairly say that you're one of my favorite authors. Great job!! :D

I think this is a very cute story. I thought a few parts were a little unrealistic - I know Hermione is a good student, but I don't know that she would make such a big deal about Harry going back to Hogwarts when he obviously needs to look for Horcruxes. And Fleur's accent wasn't quite written correctly (there were way too many v's). But the plot was very intriguing, and I would like to find out what Lupin knows!!

The Love Of His Life by joanna

Summary: Sirius wants to find his soul mate and asks James's permission to date Lily.
Reviewer: the_evenstar Signed

Wow! I really enjoyed this chapter! You know, it only makes sense that Sirius and James would spat like that – I mean, Harry’s pretty irritable, and he had to get it from somewhere! Haha! But seriously, I really liked the way you characterized Sirius. He’s a difficult character to write, and one of my absolute favorites, but I think you did fantastic job. The whole “soul-mate” idea was wonderful! It gave Sirius the “bad reputation” but the sweet inner personality that I absolutely LOVE in Sirius. I think I’m hooked. :)

Chapter seven is here :)

Reviewer: the_evenstar Signed
Date: 08/20/07 Title: Chapter 6: She should get another detention for plagiarism!

You know, I'm really starting to love Rosy - I think she's developed a lot as a character since the first chapters.

And there were so many funny parts in this chapter, from Rosy's understated asides (my favorite being, "It wouldn’t have surprised me if I had walked out of it with white hair that’s balding in places, sagging breasts and a dead husband." :D) to Holly stripping to Abba, and the sex-obsessed bunnies! Absolutely hilarious...

But the cliffhangers! Obviously, Holly getting murdered was a tad unexpected (I'm dying for an update, just so you know!), but also, Rosy's headaches and blacking out and waking up somewhere else... that's a bit unsettling, and I can't wait to hear why that's happening to her! Oh, and Jennifer... she really does scare me, but in a good way. :P

So... I can't wait for you to update, but I hope your move went well, and all that school work! :D

-Brandi

Author's Response: Aw thank you. Rosy is a bit of a crazy lass, can\'t help but love her myself :P. Hehe, I\'m glad you find it funny. I always worry that I sound like I\'m trying to be funny but fail miserably, but I guess not :) Sorry about the cliff hangers (And the slow update :P) you\'ll find out soon enough, no doubt. As soon as I get over my writers block :(. Hehe, Jennifer is actually based on one of my friends (as requested by her) but only in description and name, really. Personality wise, yeah, I agree, scary :S. She will play quite a big role in later chapters. Woah, this is long. Thanks so much :) xxx

A Light Hits The Gloom by Insecurity

Rated: 1st-2nd Years •
Summary: Exactly one year after Dumbledore's death, Snape is forced to return to Hogwarts. He expects to be in and out quickly, without any lamenting on times gone by or any interruptions. The castle is empty, having been closed down the previous summer, and he finds it very unnerving. But when he finds Hermione scurrying around his storeroom his plans change quite rapidly. This is my EXTREMELY long response to the SPEW Anniversary challenge. *Nudges readers* Please review!

What a great story! I loved the balance in Severus and Hermione's dialogue, how he explained the situation just enough to make sense. I mean, I like that he didn't just pour his heart out to her, because he is still a very guarded individual, but I liked that he was open enough to talk to her about things. Especially after Harry calling him a coward in HBP, I think that Severus would really want someone to understand his predicament.

But more than anything, I love your writing voice! This line was one of my favorites: "And there it was -- the truth! Hermione laid it out in front of him like a bloody corpse at a murder scene." Your style is so simple and honest, very easy to read! Great, great job! :D

Into the Sunset by LoLolita

Summary: She was hopeless, he a romantic, they were perfection. Ripped apart again and again, they always seemed to be able to find each other once more. Why couldn't they have it like their best friends, for which everything was so... perfect?
Reviewer: the_evenstar Signed

Good job! This fic is so unique - it's one of the few I have read in which the characters are central. And, in all honesty, I think that's most in line with JKR's work, because (well, for me) Harry Potter is magical because the characters are alive. And by the time you've finished reading, they're your friends.

And, I've already told you, but it's worth repeating - your imagery is amazing. Especially figurative imagery, in the "hope tonics" in particular.

Can't wait for more!

Positively hilarious! Oh, I do love a good humor... And Tonks! You know, before this story, I really hadn't given her much thought as a character for a fanfic... But she's absolutely amazing! And in character, too - I could believe everything she said and did. And it was so cute that she talked Kingsley into doing the prank with her! Lots of lighthearted fun - I really enjoyed it! Good job!

Holiday love from,
*The Order of the Ravenclaw House Elves*

Author's Response: Thanks so much for reviewing! Oh, Tonks is really a blast a write, especially when teamed up with Kingsley. They really do work well together; Kingsley\'s serious countering Tonk\'s playfulness. I\'m glad you enjoyed it, thanks again.

Cliché Nation by just_the_contrary

Rated: 3rd-5th Years •
Summary: A compilation of the most commonly used Harry Potter clichés in the fandom. Features Angsty!Harry, Sweet!Draco, Head Dorms, sudden romances in the forms of Ron/Hermione, Harry/Ginny and of course, Draco/Hermione, because what's a cliché without them?

The Marauders also make an appearance in this fic, including Lily/Lily's best friend/Lily's other best friend.

Warning: mention of hippopotamuses inside.

Oh... my goodness. I can't tell you how astounded I was to read a humor fic that was actually FUNNY... But this one made me CRY, I was laughing so hard! And I promise that's not an exaggeration. Sausages! Oh my goodness. You're brilliant, end of story. :D

Author's Response: Thank you so much! You called me brilliant! wow (blushes manically). Sausages are a random food that seem to produce laughs... maybe after my next chapter is accepted I\'ll edit it to make it include sausages. :) You cried? AMAZING! It is NOT the end of the story, there is more coming... Thank you.

Journey to the End by crazy_purple_hp_freak

Rated: 3rd-5th Years •
Summary: The final battle is looming and Ginny is alone, having being left behind for her own protection. Always?

I just thought I'd let you know that your story was so beautiful it all but made me cry. Well, I'll not lie - it DID make me cry. :D But in a good, very wonderful way. I particularly loved the beginning, focusing on Ginny's love for Harry, and how intensely she wanted to help him. That was just heart-breaking! I mean, I couldn't even imagine trying to cope with loving Harry, but missing him; while at the same time wanting to help him, but also wanting to give him his space... I thought you perfectly captured Ginny's predicament.

Oh, but the conclusion was wonderful! It's always been a secret fear of mine that the "love is the answer" ending that JKR has blatantly foreshadowed would be a bit, well... corny, but yours was lovely! (So perhaps there's hope, right? :P) I thought it was nice that the "love" wasn't just Lily's love for Harry, which is quite obvious by now - more people are capable of love! But you know that :P, and I thought it was so sweet that you chose Harry and Ginny to be that love.

Author's Response: *hands over tissues* Aww :( Thank you so much for reviewing and for all the lovely comments. :)

So, you like the Weasley boys too, huh? :D They are brilliant. I love characters about which I can write a good humor fic.

But the other characters were wonderful, too! It's so rare, anymore, to read a fic with really well-formed characters, but I completely believed yours! Especially Ron - I could see him saying and doing everything you wrote. Good job, and good luck with the challenge!

Author's Response: Hi there! Thanks so much for coming by to read this story! Yes, it is fun to write about the Weasley boys. :) I\'m glad I kept everyone in character. Thanks so much for the great review! Good luck yourself! ~Gina :)

I thought this story was just fantastic! I'd comment on everything I liked, but it'd be far too much to mention. I liked how you kept the mood consistent throughout the story and still managed to make everything believable/not too dark. It was just great. And the ending! Well, it broke my heart, but I fully agree that it had to happen that way.

'Twas The Night Before The Yule Ball by Gmariam

I don't think I've laughed this hard in a long time! I think these lines were my favorite:

“Now Harry, my boy, just a bit o’ advice:
When you dance with yeh girl, be sure t’ dance nice."
“Thanks, Hagrid,” said Harry, and laughed with a grin.
“I certainly wasn’t planning on doing her in.”

I mean, the whole idea of Hagrid as a Santa-figure is funny in the first place, but to have him giving Harry advice about girls is side-splitting! I'm just glad that you're in Ravenclaw, because a parody like this is gold!

Holiday love from,
*The Order of the Ravenclaw House Elves*

Author's Response: Oh my, thank you for the wonderful review! *squee* And from a house elf, no less! I\'m so glad you enjoyed this poem, it was so much fun to write. I think the idea of Hagrid giving out romantic advice is funny too, given his relationship with Madame Maxime. Thank you for reading it, and for participating in the gift drop - and thank you for my lovely gift!! ~Gina :)

Absolutely hilarious! I always thought it was a little creepy with Santa Claus - "He sees you when you're sleeping, he knows when you're awake" - but making it Voldemort is downright disturbing... but funny, all the same! Good job! :D

Author's Response: *giggles* I didn\'t realize how creepy the original was until I wrote this. :D Thanks for the review.

Summary: “How could it have come to this? How did we fall so far?”

It is the day after Christmas, and while the rest of the world is returning to normalcy after the holiday, one man isn’t feeling very cheerful. The holidays have only allowed him to remember the pain and loss of the previous year, though he tries desperately to forget those memories. But as a fresh blanket of snow has covered the ground, he decides to take a walk to clear his mind, and at the same time, he decides to take a chance; he allows himself to just remember.

Wow - from the opening description of Remus, I was hooked. (He reminded me of Johnny Depp as Mort Rainey in The Secret Window, who spent a lot of time sleeping as he grieved over his divorce.) Anyway, never mind my Depp-obsession, this story was so beautifully written! I especially liked the flashback-memories. They just felt so real! Good job! :D

Author's Response: Oh, no, a Depp-obsession is VERY good! (\'Secret Window\' is one of my favourite movies, as a matter of fact!)

Anyway, I\'m very glad you liked the story, Brandi, and thank you so much for the nice review. My favourite part of this was the different flashbacks, as well, so I\'m thrilled you liked them.

I just can't tell you how excited I am to have come across this fic! I was absolutely blown away by the poetic quality of your writing. The imagery, characterization, the sound, even, of the words read aloud just really impressed me. Very few authors (professional or no) have struck me in such a way.

Anyway, what I love so much about this story is that you don't characterize either Rowena or Salazar as entirely good or evil. It chills me equally that Rowena poisoned Salazar, and that Salazar was the one who taught Rowena how to love ("He teaches her to love with whispered words and soft caresses..."). I thought your portrayal of both characters was remarkably realistic, as no one person is always good or always bad. I think it's interesting, then, how haphazard our antagonist/protagonist ideas usually are. I mean, I sympathized with both Rowena and Salazar, and I think that's entirely as it should be.

Again, you did a wonderful job, as you are a wonderful writer. I look forward to reading more from you!

Author's Response: Wow. Thank you! As I was writing this, I was focusing a lot on the actual sounds of the words, so I\'m glad you liked them! The greyness of characters is something that has always fascinated me, and all my favorite stories have characters that can at any point go either way - they might work for evil, they might work for good - and you don\'t know which they\'ll choose. I\'m relieved to hear that you think that came across - I was afraid I had made Salazar too dark, not giving enough reasons to make Rowena\'s love understandable. Thank you!

What a great story! I absolutely loved how you characterized both Ginny and Voldemort You made both of them so human, it was really touching. I always thought that one of the things that made HP so great is that the main antagonist is an actual character, not simply an embodiment of some vague, evil force, and I think you illustrated that quite nicely! Great job! :D

Wow! I can't even begin to tell you how AMAZING this story is! I absolutely love the interaction between Harry and his daughter. It's nice to see Harry as a daddy. :D The most touching moment, though, was at the end, when Harry said "Too" just like his daughter had... Aww, I nearly cried! Very creepy, but very sweet, too; I like that combination. :D

Author's Response: Since I LOVE your writing I will gladly and humbly accept that compliment from you. Thank you.
