Author's Response: Thanks for your input. I assure you that I will not be disappointed by book 7. JKR is a great writer and I am expecting a beautiful ending. That is not the same as expecting a happy ending. It would be great if Harry and Hermione pair up at the end, but if Harry ends up with Ginny or Luna or Cho or Gabrielle Delacour that would be fine too. It would be a bit depressing if Harry ends up dead but if I had to place money on it that’s what I’d bet on. In the middle of your childish outburst you asked a question about Hermione’s response to Ginny kissing Harry after the last Quidditch game. Bravo! You are making a feeble attempt to analyze the books which is more than most R-Hr shippers are capable of. By April of 1997 Hermione has been Ginny’s friend for at least a couple of years and she knows how Ginny feels about Harry. Hermione wasn’t surprised by the H-G development and she could deal with it emotionally and intellectually. From Hermione’s perspective, seeing Harry with Ginny is a lot better than a couple of alternatives. First H-G eliminates the really scary ship, the horrible possibility of Harry pairing up with Ron. Harry and Ron went for a moonlight stroll in the garden at the Yule Ball. Ron was the person Harry would miss the most in the lake challenge. Harry’s relationship with Cho fell apart very quickly. After all of that there may have been some reason to wonder about the possibility of Harry being gay. But Harry’s hormones flow the right way! What a relief! Second H-G eliminates H-L. The idea of Harry and Luna seems to drive Hermione nuts. Generally Hermione is a nice person except when dealing with one of Harry’s enemies but she was absolutely nasty to Luna on several occasions in OotP. The Hermione-McLaggen date was arranged after Harry asked Luna to the Christmas party. (It wasn’t about irritating Ron. That was a transparent and poorly conceived lie. He wasn’t even invited to Slughorn’s party. Hermione is not very good at lying.) At the party Hermione came over to Harry and told him she had “escaped” from McLaggen under the mistletoe. She then compared McLaggen to Grawp. She was obviously attempting to goad Harry into stepping in. It was pretty clumsy and Harry didn’t bite. Hermione can’t figure out Luna Lovegood, but fortunately she doesn’t have to. The third reason H-G is a relief to Hermione is that Ginny has a history of going through boyfriends. (Who advised Ginny to start dating other boys?) There is no such thing as a couple that gets along all of the time and if Harry and Ginny have a fight, Hermione will be close by. If Harry ends up happy with Ginny then that’s bitter-sweet for Hermione. What matters most to her is Harry’s safety and happiness. Hermione’s devotion to Harry has been unswerving since the night Harry met Sirius Black, when she left Ron unconscious on the ground and followed Harry into a swarm of Dementors. (They changed that in the PoA movie to confuse the simple-minded, but the book version is the canon.) Reread all of the HP books with an open mind. JKR writes better stuff than any of these silly fanfics. Ron is attracted towards Hermione but these impulses don’t come from his head or his heart, they start a bit lower than that. Hermione’s actions and words make so much more sense if you assume she loves Harry. And by the way, you need to chill out.
