I am a 29 year-old college professor at a little university in the South. This semester, however, in addition to my usual freshman English classes, I'm teaching two sections on the Harry Potter series as literature. Seriously! Unfortunately, I spend a lot of the the time I'm supposed to be grading papers reading fanfic instead, and I've been writing it for about five years now. In fact, my chaptered fic, "Of Christmas Past," was the first story I wrote and it's still not finished...I'll finish eventually though, I promise! It was on hiatus for a while, but I've started it up again, so it might actually be finished this year.

"Of Christmas Past" was also nominated for the Best Cannon Romance Quicksilver Quill Award for 2009! I'm so excited! I mean, there are over three thousand stories in Romance, and at least fifteen hundred of those are cannon! And I was nominated twice! I don't even mind if I don't win, just to be nominated was an honor. Anyway, good luck to everyone else who was nominated!

Speaking of "Of Christmas Past," I'm very very sorry that it's taking me so long to update it. I keep having problems, and then encountering massive writer's block. But I will finish it eventually, even if it takes me five years. Hopefully it won't, but I won't abandon the story.

If you want to read these in chronological order, they are as follows:

1. "Langlock" - set during James and Lily's time
2. "Chasing Away the Dark" - Ginny's POV during the middle of OotP
3. " Among the Ranks of Heroes" - set right after Sirius' death in OotP
4. "Comforter and Comforted" - set a few days after Sirius' death in OotP
5. "The Monster ON Harry's Chest" - set in the middle of HBP
6. "Twice Lost" - set near the end of HBP
7. "Of Christmas Past" - originally set directly after HBP, but became Alternate Universe after DH came out. So, it's set during DH, but isn't totally cannon, since a few major details changed in DH.
8. "The Queen of May" - technically set during DH, but is mostly a flashback to Snape's childhood.
9. "Falling into Darkness" - set during DH
10. "The Tree by the Lake" - technically set right after the Battle of Hogwarts in DH, but is mostly flashbacks.

This was lovely. A really excellent story, and well written too. I liked the way you characterized them both, particularly Ginny's concern and Harry's grief. Might one enquire where that pic can be found? Fan art is the best.

Right Under His Nose by CathCarl

Rated: 3rd-5th Years •
Summary: Harry comes back from serving detention with Ron and finds Ginny and Dean in a rather compromising position. A strange and confusing set of new feelings erupts... like wanting to punch Dean Thomas senseless. But what's confusing Harry most of all is that Ginny no longer seems to be just Ron's little sister... she's a beautiful girl, standing right under his nose-- exactly where he hadn't been looking.

I love this story! And I think you must have a psychic link into JK Rowling's brain. I was about halfway through when I saw the reference to HBP coming out in a few months and was like, "What?" I thought you'd read it already. Anyway, excellent job. I supppose I could actually review now.

Anyway, I really like your writing. You get a little mushy and lovey-dovey for me sometimes, but not too badly, and it's well worth it, especially for the funny parts. The section when Harry's loopy had me in stitches. Besides, fluff is good! I think you get all the characters dead-on, particularly Harry, Ginny, Hermione, and Ron. I don't quite understand why Bill is always the scary older brother. I would see Charlie in that position myself, but that's really personal opinion, and your Bill works perfectly well the way he is. I like that he really only gets mad at Harry b/c he didn't tell him first.

I can't wait until you update, though I completely understand about having school and other things interfere with writing. Last semester I had finals and then got sick when all I really wanted to do was work on one of my fanfics. Keep up the good work!

Spot-on characterization of Luna! Perfect! Half the time she's either too dreamy or not dreamy enough or whatever. You did very well with Ginny and Ron too. Your writing is excellent, and I look forward to reading more of it.

"Even the Wesleys." That was fantastic! You give Harry such good ideas...you should give romantic advice to all the other boys I know. You manage to get that perfect mix of fluffiness and belivability. Lovely!

Author's Response: lol! Thank you!

Red by rockinfaerie

Rated: 3rd-5th Years •
Summary: James Potter's once privileged and sheltered life alters dramatically as Lord Voldemort increases his stronghold on Great Britain. While a rational but brilliant Transfiguration teacher, a grieving socialite mother, a star-gazing, forest-dwelling centaur, and a host of other characters contemplate the vicious and constant conflict between Good and Evil, James embarks on a dangerous life fuelled by passion, love, anger and blood...

Things can only get redder.

This is one of the best Marauder, James/Lily story I've ever read. You've characterized Lily PERFECTLY; so many people make her bookish, waspish, and in general, rather annoying. Rowling's always described her as popular and well-liked, but still kind and caring, and I think you've caught that well.
You've also managed to convey James' pranking and general silliness in a way that's not exagerated. His change from bullying toe-rag to mature young man is also believable; I like that Lily isn't the sole motivating source behind it. The scenes with his parents are so touching; I love the way you write his mother.
And having him related to Lucius! A very nice touch that, and one I never really thought of, though of course, it makes perfect sense. It's so tragic too, that they were once so close and happy and now Lucius has been corrupted.
Your story is also refreshingly free of cliches while remaining canon and believable. While I love these stories, many of then annoy me because they've been written eight million times. But yours is unique, and an absolute pleasure to read. I can't wait for more! Please don't let another year go by before you update, though I won't beg you for an immediate update. That would be nice though...

Author's Response: Wow - thank you so much! I\'m really glad you like my characterization - I love writing the characters, and I feel that, as the marauder era is rather shadowy in the canon, there\'s more scope for fanfic writers... and thankfully, the great DH didn\'t rip my plot to shreds, so Red can and will continue - Part Two is on it\'s way!

The Magic of Muggle Sweets by Huskers

Rated: 1st-2nd Years •
Summary: I wrote this for the, Short and Sweet Summer Fic Contest, on pnoenixsong.net. It took fifth place in the contest, and I am posting it here for people to read now.

The story is set in the summer after Harry's fifth year about a week before the return to school. The premise of the contest was to write a short, 3000 words or less, story that involved the sharing of a sweet of some sort between the characters in the story. The sweet could be Muggle or Magical. This is what I came up with.

"Sweets to the sweet!" A wonderful little one-shot. I especially liked the M&Ms. And well-written too.

Absolutely PERFECT!! And undoubtedly the best fanfic of this particular moment in HBP I've found, and it seems to be the most common one. Well written, very in-character, and funny too! With lots of lovely fluff. And you made it nice and long! Excellent!

OMG OMG OMG!!!! THAT WAS BRILLIANT!!! I can't sing your praises enough! I've just read the whole thing; couldn't stop until I'd finished. And I definitely cried when I thought Harry was dead. You are such a fantastic writer; your characterizations are spot on and you hit the reader hard with all the emotion and power as if they were there watching it. I'm both glad and sorry you finished it, since now I'm done reading it. But there is the Prologue coming up. Let me just say, the last battle and the thing with the spell was absolutely amazing, especially the bits about him "holding Death in his hands" and so on. And it was wonderful to see Dumbledore again! Hats off to you!

Melt With You by littleWoNdErFuL

Rated: 1st-2nd Years •
Summary: What happened after Harry kissed Ginny in the Gryffindor Common Room after the Quidditch match? This is a one-shot about what could have gone on that day on the school grounds, to where the rumors about Harry’s tattoo start, told to the song “I Melt With You” by Modern English.

A very good version of what happened afterwards. You write well, and the song fit too.

Moment of Clarity by Melindaleo

Rated: 1st-2nd Years •
Summary: A HBP Missing Moment (so beware, spoilers ahead). Ron told Harry that Ginny had visited the hospital wing while he'd been unconscious. We know what Harry's overactive subconscious imagined happened during that visit...but what was Ginny thinking?

"Mum, Dad, It's Me... Harry." by Mudblood428

Rated: 1st-2nd Years •
Summary: Harry, Ron, and Hermione make a trip to Godric's Hollow to visit the Potters' graves. There, Harry speaks to his parents for the first time, and in so doing, discovers that the dead are never truly lost. (One-shot. Bring your kleenex.)
Reviewer: Chaser921 Signed
Date: 01/18/07 Title: Chapter 1: One-Shot

Very nice, I really enjoyed it. Well written, and great characterization too. Harry acts exactly how I'd expect him to. It's funny, I actually used an inscription very similar to yours in one of my Of Christmas Past when Harry visits their graves. I didn't steal it, I swear! I hadn't read this yet!

A Flash of Scarlet by Vindictus Viridian

Rated: 1st-2nd Years •
Summary: This is a retelling of Harry's second Quidditch game from a very different point of view.
The manoeuvre that had sent this broom a few feet to the left would have put his old one into a wild loop -- in gaining manageability, Cleansweep had lost all the pepper. That loop would have made him hard to hit and given him a good view of the whole field. Knowing he couldn't do it now made him feel horribly vulnerable out here, and he doubted again whether he shouldn't have stayed in the stands -- or, better yet, indoors.
Reviewer: Chaser921 Signed
Date: 01/03/07 Title: Chapter 1: -----

Fantastic! And very creative of you to think of doing this story from Snape's perspective. Now we know why he was so grumpy during the game ;-)

Author's Response: Thanks! I did think, back the very first time I read the first book, that he seemed awfully ornery even for him. I suppose that may have been my first-ever plotbunny, though it took its time growing.

It's the Little Things by AvidHPReader

Rated:
Summary: Ginny’s POV, missing moments from HBP. Ginny starts to notice the little things that Harry has been doing around her lately. The more she thinks about it, she can only come to one conclusion. But why would he possibly fancy her now after all this time? And why did he have to wait until she was already seeing someone? Rated for mild language.

Oh, FANTASTIC! A wonderful job, spot on characterization, and hilariously funny to boot. I especially loved the last part about exactly what kind of kiss it was. And you write very well, gramatically and stuff, by the way.
