But there is a lot more that Kalama has to lose besides her own education. Before her mother died, she made a promise that she would become a witch and carry on her real father's legacy. So now, she must decide which is more important: the only people in the world who love her, or a promise to the dead.

But Adam Wyatt had only one thing on his mind: the Triwizard Tournament, and the fact that by being invited to participate, his school will become the first country outside of Europe allowed to compete. Although Adam doesn't trust any of is classmates to make it through the tournament without disgracing themselves, he doesn't feel confident that he'll make it out alive.

But out on the prairie one night, with a sprained ankle and no wand, Adam receieves a much needed perspective check in the form of a young bison.
